na, I think they'll have no choice but to move EDR away from the XCO/DHI races and do something else with it. EDR format needs to adapt to the venues, not the other way around. And I think Ball and the rest at ESO know that deep down. So I'm guessing EDR will remain a world cup event up to 2030, but probably be sent off into mass participation obscurity with marathon XC, where we see it at some venues that have DH and XC but not all.

Looks to me like the EWS required a lot of effort from the ESO to make it as good as it was and now that effort is gone into running the World Series so EDR is just gonna suffer and suffer.

I wonder if they regret those statements about growing EDR (or EWS as it was at the time) and improving coverage. To my mind it doesn't do too much for their perceived integrity and I find it hardly surprising that people might not believe they have DH's best interests at heart. The complete shitshow that was the AMA with Chris ball on the other site did nothing to help with that in my opinion.

They put the broadcast in with gcn/Eurosport or whatever you had here in the US. You couldn't expect them to give them away for free. Their other customers subscribing for road cycling etc. would not be stoked.

Subscription for 6-9 months or even a year was less than some people pay for an MTB tyre.

The argument that the money is not going back to MTB because the riders ain't getting it is silly. WDBsports are now covering all areas of organisation that were previously covered by uci, red bull, sub contractors and the local organisers. They've likely got huge staff costs and overheads..some of it redundant I imagine. So like I said expecting them to pay riders or increase prize money in year one BEFORE they even organised a race is crazy. My guess is they operated at a loss this year.

If things like prize money don't grow by year 3-4 then riders will be correct to get angry.

Long time lurker, but decided to finally sign up - as this post hits the mark.

WDB Sports are running the MTB World Cup the same way many motorsport series are run; They win the tender off the governing body, and then they do everything; organise, promote, sell media rights, etc

All the governing body does is make sure rules/ regs are adhered to.....

The good thing is I highly doubt they would make a change to make $ just before WC starts when they have  a lot more big $ stuff that will be a reason to get things moved over asap

Ball sports fans losing it because the chiefs/dolphins game is ppv on peacock. Very similar arguments to what’s going in with mtb

Probably won't affect the 2024 WC season, though--there's no exact launch date but reportedly it won't launch until this fall.

Few details available but the New York Times says the service "will also be supported by advertising." Probably tiered subscription offerings, which may or may not include an ad-free tier. At the very least, we can be certain that mountain biking coverage will continue to be an afterthought in this deal.

i couldn't read full article (paywall), but is there a separate app/subscription for those not doing the full hulu/max/disco thing? if so, that's a plus IMO if it works as easily as gcn+ did.

not sure if true, but have heard this year may only be live webcasts without replays on race day. seems insane if true, so hopefully it isn't.

Sounds like this new thing will be a standalone app, but not launching for a bit.

Seems like we're stuck with B/R Sports in the Max app (at least in the US) for this summer. There's now promos for upcoming cycling events in the app, but I don't see replays of anything.

Still no news for Canada and a few other locations from what I can tell.... like just sell each race on youtube if you have too but it would be nice to know what's up for the year outside of the US. At this point I'll take someone setting up a webcam at their TV and squinting at the stream.

All of this mess makes me extremely grateful for how affordable and accessible SX, MX, and SMX are on Peacock. Hopefully things settle in the next couple of years, but it might just be highlight recaps for me this season.

Given the growing pains the coverage last year was going through, I don't think I'll be paying for UCI World Cup streaming this year either.

Ugh. Without on-demand replay racing is dead to me. I love racing, but I love sleeping and riding my MTB more. So frustrating.

Yes, a small refund showed up back in mid-December.

That’s not really new in terms of jerseys.  If it’s also the number plate that would be a change for the better in my view.

Numbers 1-10 overall from 2022 were held all year in 2023, that’s why Jordan Williams was #11 while being the points leader at round 2 and nobody ran a #1 because that was Amaury’s number for the year.

all the changes to make it easier for outsiders to understand during broadcasting, moto numbering and red plate system seem like the lowest handing fruit for improvement. or am I missing something? because dh and Moto are about the only sports I pay any attention to.

WBD's planned merger with Paramount Global was also scuttled. Speculation is that it would not have passed regulatory review anyway.

“We are acutely aware of our position in the local media landscape and what this means for our people, and for the country as a whole,"

I'm going to go out on a limb and say zero fucks will be given by the country as a whole.
