When 11 isn't enough, go to 13. Phil Wood's 1x13 drivetrain uses a standard SRAM XX1 derailleur, an 11 speed chain, and a combination of two Shimano Ultegra 11 speed cassettes. The end result is a 13 speed system without duplicate gears.
At the front of the bike they modded a SRAM XX1 Gripshift to shift through 13 gears. The first 11 are indexed while gears 12 and 13 are friction.
The prototype shown here is on a 222mm fat bike hub, but Phil Wood says they could likely get it down to 150mm widths for use on mountain bikes.
