SHORTS BOUNTY UPDATE #2

Alright, after sifting through rule books and spending more time than I thought was possible to figure out if you can wear shorts at a World Cup, here is what I've found: the UCI is cool with shorts and knee/shin protection (page 26 HERE), but each country seems to feel different ways about half-legged clothing (and other protective gear).

Here is the 'Official Communication' from Snowshoe last weekend and Mont Sainte Anne this weekend, showing the differences between rules in the US and Canada.

Screen Shot 2023-10-05 at 12.09.06 PMScreen Shot 2023-10-05 at 12.09.29 PM

Reading the rules for this weekend, it states: 'following protections are mandatory for Junior riders and recommended for all.' We are going to interpret that as pants are mandatory for juniors but only recommended for elites. Of course, the UCI enjoys making it up as they go, so who knows how they interpret their own rules. But for now, the Shorts Bounty lives. The same rules apply to elites, and since we don't want Juniors to miss out on some cash, we found a simple solution Smile

$250 for any Junior who finishes on the podium in finals and races with shorts on over their pants (*must wear both on the podium)

You can change our sport as you please, UCI, but you can't tell us not to wear shorts! #VitalMTBShortsBounty

ALN is gonna race MSA! Given what Scarsi did in Snowshoe this could be good...

Our team rider Taylor Ostgaard went down on the last stepdown yesterday in practice as well. She dislocated her hip, and it was out of place for 3.5 hours. SUPER bummed for her coming off a 2nd at Snowshoe she was looking really strong coming into this weekend.

That's awful.  I had my shoulder dislocated for 5-6 hours (forget exactly how long, they had me pretty doped up), and it *sucked*.

Hope she heals up quickly.

Every brand is flatting here which is interesting, considering some brands didnt see such widespread issues last weekend.

For the last 48hrs, my social feeds have been echoing 3 things: track is sick, leaves are gorgeous, weather is great. Is no one looking at the forecast? It’s going to start raining in St-Anne-de-Beaupré tonight, and they’ll get roughly a month’s worth of rain in the next two days. The rock in this part of the world tends to be grippier when wet than when covered in dust, and hopefully the rain will keep the mud off, but those new fresh cut loamy sections are going to be A MESS, and probably change with every rider down. A least it looks like rain for the whole day, and everyone will have the same conditions. But I certainly don’t envy any of them, most especially Finn, Jacko, Loïc, Loris, and anyone who’s contract is up at the end of this season.

Pretty sure riders are aware of what's coming. BK was practising wet lines in Ed's vlog.

Anyone know what happened to Evan Medcalf? Doesn’t seem to have taken a quali run at all?

I don’t want to jinx it but not sure that’s the forecast anymore . The special weather statement released by Environment Canada says the worst of it is supposed to come on Saturday night. Looking at a few different weather apps they are calling for a few mm’s Saturday during the day but 40 plus overnight into Sunday.

But it’s mountain weather and anything is possible. I don’t think rain was forecasted for the xc race last year ( or at least I wasn’t expecting the way I was dressed) and it hammered rain halfway through the women’s race.

Evan crashed off the Steve Smith jump and then crashed into a tree right before the finish. He did not qualify just missed it.

bummer for evan. he was on such a good pace lately!

re: weather...still looks pretty rough according to this forecast

light rain almost seems like the worst situation. there's a lot of dust out there that needs significant moisture. dumping water to keep things washed away would be great!

The intro to Moi Moi TV is equally terrifying.

To @ride , I got to watch Ostergaard at Nationals at the rock drops as course marshall.
Smart kid. Talented.  She has the gifts for this sport.
Lots of young ladies have come along with just a bit too much disregard for talent & gave in to raw speed and hurtling.
Can tell she is technically gifted & genuinely fast, not just brazen.

Best of luck on her recovery.

Jr's just left a litter trail of bike and body parts on the hill. That was insane.

Im honestly surprised that more people are not bumping up tire pressure to address all these flats and failures.

thought of this too late to start a movement/hashtag LOL, but since quali carries no points, the top protected riders could rally for the underdogs/non-protected in MSA.

the top 20 protected men (and is it 5 elite women?) should roll out of gate for quali and DNF. they'll still make semis. that leaves 20 non-protected spots for semis, so it would be an 80-rider semi-final for men.

of course this means nothing if i'm misunderstanding the format (highly likely even though it's the last race of the year) or there's some amendment i don't know about.

Yep.  Guess we'll see where the weather decides it wants to water and when.
Gwin & Stevie Smith have signature runs as the rain comes in here as last man down.

But this time feels different.
Last thing anyone wants is like the one a few years back where the rain came in and turned the track to glass for the top 20 w/ AG sitting up top wanting to do big things.  Was that at Les Gets? Hard pack but for race run, literally polished glass clay.
