World Champs in Andorra is a week away, so let's get hyped and make this the place to keep up with happenings. It's a big, drawn out week with Jr and Elite separated. Juniors race on Thursday, Elites on Saturday.

Technical Guide with all the rules/regs etc

Live timing is via Tissot

DH schedule

Monday - Junior only track walk
Tuesday - Junior practice sessions, Elite track walk in afternoon
Wednesday - Junior practice and qualifying (seeding), Elite practice in afternoon
Thursday - JUNIOR RACE, Elite qualifying
Friday - Elite practice
Saturday - ELITE RACE

For Fantasy, we're probably going to have two separate games...one for Junior, one for Elite, but total points added for both score for Top 5 prizes. Double points applied for World Champs Fantasy, too. Stay tuned for more on that.

It’s wild that a large portion of the junior field wasn’t even born yet when you took that photo of Sam… I feel old

Did USAC change the way DH riders are selected? Last I knew, top five at National Champs go on to Worlds, but I don't see Aaron Gwin on the list above despite getting on the Elite Men's podium.

USAC just sent their official PR about team selection. here it is below

USA Cycling Announces 2024 Mountain Bike World Championships Team

The UCI Mountain Bike World Championships will take place in Pal Arinsal, Andorra on August 28 – September 1.

PAL ARINSAL, Andorra – July 21, 2024 – The 2024 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships are headed to Pal Arinsal, Andorra where riders will compete in Cross-Country Olympic (XCO), Short Track (XCC), Downhill (DHI), and E-MTB Cross-Country. Team USA is looking strong after a successful season at the Olympics and on the World Cup circuit.

On the XCO side, 20 riders will compete across the elite, under-23, and junior categories. Haley Batten (Park City, Utah; Specialized Factory Racing) is fresh off of winning a silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, as well as Savilia Blunk’s (Inverness, Calif.; Decathlon Ford Racing Team) 12th place finish. Riley Amos (Durango, Colo.; Trek Factory Racing) had nothing to lose in Paris racing with the elites. He rode to the USA’s best male finish – 7th place. Christopher Blevins (Durango, Colo.; Specialized Factory Racing) finished in the top 15.

For the downhill riders, the American team has never been better. Podium hunters Dakotah Norton (Clinton, Tenn.; Mondraker Factory Racing) and Luca Shaw (Pisgah Forest, N.C.; Canyon Collective) are both sitting top ten in the World Cup overall standings after they both landed on three podiums each this season. Anna Newkirk (Riehen, Switzerland; Beyond Racing MTB ) found her speed this year landing on her first-ever elite World Cup podium taking second in Leogang earlier this year. Junior rider Asa Vermette (Durango, Colo.; Frameworks Racing) has taken his first year of World cup racing by storm. Maybe he passed as he figures there no point being there if he can't put in 100%. I really do hope he gets it some day.

Interesting that Richie decided to race AND made the cut. He has been making the finals at WCs most of the time he decides to race though

There's something comforting in knowing that no matter where you are or the level you ride, it will always be wonderful weather before and after a weekend, but rain on your ride 🙄

My bet is that he's got a two-year plan to get out of Enduro.

Two out of three USA Cycling roster women elite DH riders aren't from the USA. Wait, what?

i think Jesse qualified for Canada but chose not to go. Kasper Wooley and Johnathan Hellly will be there for their first UCI DH race.

"39 江 CHIANG 勝山 Sheng Shan TPE 1994 - CHINESE TAIPEI"

So the UCI's official standpoint in the China/Taiwan conflict is they agree with China that Taiwan is not free but belongs to China, got it.

I think that's in line with the Olympics, Taiwan = Chinese Taipei.

Whereas Hong Kong and Macau compete as such in name, but if they win a gold medal, the Chinese national anthem is played. I am guessing Taiwan has its own anthem played if it wins gold.

Is Aletha Ostgaard too young to race junior? She is arguably one of the fastest American.

Yep, she is still racing age 16.  Next year Aletha will be eligible.

Jesse's going for St. Anne, or so he told me the other day!

Sweet! Last I heard he still needed UCI points, do you know if he has them already?

To race a DH world Cup you need to have obtained at least 40 UCI points in the UCI DHI individual reference ranking, national federations may enter a maximum of 3 supplementary riders per category (these riders must wear national team clothing) or belong to a UCI ELITE MTB TEAM or a UCI MTB TEAM.

Jesse has 60 UCI points from his 4th at the Canadian National Championships.

Race week is here! Over the years, World Champs has produced some historic runs and some great champions, and you'd have to say that 2024 looks like it's setting up for more of the same! Over the past ten years, one name has stood out above the rest - talking about Loic Bruni of course. From 2014 to 2023, he has won five of the ten World Champs races (in addition to his general World Cup success during this time), and this flying Frenchman is well known for his ability to step things up on the day that matters the most. There is one big name missing from the list of past World Champions though, and that is Loic's compatriot Amaury Pierron. Amaury has bounced back from injury to produce some absolutely remarkable race runs this season, and you'd have to say he's the outright favorite going into Andorra based on recent form - he was unbeatable in Val di Sole and Les Gets, laying down winning runs that are ranked among the best the sport has ever seen. Add to that the fact that he'll be essentially racing at home in Andorra, with Commencal HQ just up the road from the track, and the odds are probably stacked in his favor. There are plenty of other riders who would love to put a stop to the French domination though, from Ronan Dunne who took his first World Cup win earlier this year to Dak Norton who has come agonizingly close to his first win recently as well.

On the women's side, you'd have to say that the rainbow stripes are Vali Höll's to lose. When she stays upright she is definitely the woman to beat, but World Champs has a habit of producing unexpected results from time to time, so don't count out the rest of the field. Tahnee Seagrave has completed a remarkable return from injury and is definitely knocking on the door, and never disregard Myriam Nicole who like Amaury will be benefiting from the support of her "home away from home" crowd. Can't wait to watch it all unfold!

Isn't Andorra also home to Bruni?

I guess so, yes - I was more talking about the Commencal connection for Amaury and Myriam.

Can't remember whose YouTube channel it was on, but it looked like Bruni, Vergier and Minnaar have been hitting the Andorra WC track together daily for the entire summer!

I’d have to say big race Bruni is still the favorite. Attaining the jersey tends to put additional pressure on riders and those who have already won it probably look at it like it’s just a race run but would love to see new peeps wearing it!
