It's that time again, time for the world's top big mountain specialists to come together in the Utah desert for the ultimate showdown in freeride. Chat about it here - to kick things off, did Brendan Fairclough just spoil the big venue reveal? Seems like we're headed back to the 2018/2019 site, where Brendog and his crew have some unfinished business with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson...

Here's a refresher on what went down in 2019, if indeed we are headed back there we could be in for some seriously crazy lines!

I'm surprised Brendog is going back, sounded like he was done with Rampage after last year.

Yeah, he didn’t take part last year. Prequalified were only the top 8 finishers from 2023.

Two things:

1. Here's confirmation from Szymon Godziek that Rampage is indeed headed back to the 2018/2019 zone

2. In case you forgot, this shit is GNARLY - 😱😱😱 :

Updated participant list for the women, full press release from Red Bull below:

Women’s Roster Changes For Red Bull Rampage

Virgin, Utah (September 6, 2024) – In just over a month’s time, eight of the top athletes in freeride mountain biking will drop in as part of the first-ever women’s competition in Red Bull Rampage history and a brand-new two-day event format. Riders Jess Blewitt (NZL) and Hannah Bergemann (USA), both of whom were part of the initial list of invited athletes, have had to decline their invitations to the competition, calling up two alternates in their place.

Blewitt is unable to compete due to conflicting schedules with her World Cup racing commitments. As a result, an invitation was offered to first alternate Harriet Burbidge-Smith (AUS), but she unfortunately had to decline due to an injury. The invitation was then extended to second alternate Chelsea Kimball who has accepted the call-up and will join the other competitors in the start gate on October 10th.

“I feel so honored to have been selected to make history at Red Bull Rampage in October,” shared Blewitt. “Unfortunately, due to the timing of the last World Cup race and the initial build phase at Rampage, logistically it doesn’t work so I am unable to attend. I’m hopeful that in the future the dates will align, and I can someday compete at Red Bull Rampage. Wishing the laddies the best of luck in the dez….until next time!!”

Additionally, Hannah Bergemann (USA) sustained a lower leg injury and will be unable to compete in Red Bull Rampage. An invitation was extended to third alternate Georgia Astle (CAN) who has since accepted and will also line up alongside Kimball for this historic moment.

“I’m absolutely devastated to say the least. I’ve been working so hard to be there, and was looking forward to it so much, and it feels unfair to have a small error take it away,” said Bergemann in an Instagram post. “So gutted at the moment but I’m feeling grateful to have some supportive people in my life helping me through this and a good medical team to take care of me and get me back on my feet. And you know I’ll be working as hard as I can to come back strong. Despite this rough end to my season, I’ve had one of the best years of riding and traveling. Still can’t wait to watch everyone kill it this year at Red Bull Rampage, and I’ll do my best to still be there and support.”

The eight competitors and alternates in the inaugural women’s competition were selected by a committee of former Red Bull Rampage competitors, pro athletes, judges, and industry experts based on a combination of recent competition results, video submissions, and overall ability.

The inaugural Red Bull Rampage was held in 2001, and since then, 17 different events and 9 different winners have earmarked their place in the history books. Only time will tell which rider will add their name to the history books as the first-ever women’s winner.

The full information on the venue and the competition format from Red Bull:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2024 Red Bull Rampage Venue & Competition Details Released

- Find Out Where to Watch the World’s Top Freeride Athletes Compete -

Virgin, Utah (September 10, 2024) – In one month’s time, the first riders will drop in for the 18th edition of Red Bull Rampage, the premier big-mountain freeride mountain biking competition. The top 8 female athletes will kick things off on Thursday, October 10th followed by the top 18 male athletes on Saturday, October 12th as part of a brand-new two-day event format in what’s sure to be a historic throwdown in the desert of Southwest Utah.

The 2024 Red Bull Rampage will return to the iconic site of the 2018/2019 competition venue. The men will return to the same zone they competed on in 2018/2019, while the women’s competition will take place immediately adjacent to the men’s in a brand-new untouched zone, each with their own distinct start gates and finish corrals. This new dedicated raw zone will act as a completely blank canvas for the women to scout and craft the line that will best showcase their riding style and ability. The top five athletes in both the women’s and men’s competitions will receive equal prize money for their efforts.

“The 2018/2019 site is a special one for me because I was a digger for my friend Bas when it was a brand-new zone for Rampage and I learned so much during that event. We shared the line with the late Jordie Lunn, so I have very fond memories of that year,” says first-time competitor Casey Brown. “Having a fresh venue for the women for the inaugural year is super special. It will definitely showcase the true grit it takes to build a full top-to-bottom line and we get to exercise our full creative potential. I’m so excited to get digging!”

Meanwhile, the men are returning to the home of the 2018 and 2019 contests where some of the most legendary moments in freeriding have occurred, including:

Brandon Semenuk’s third Red Bull Rampage victory in 2019 with a ride packed full of tricks and technical riding
Godziek’s 2019 stylish and smooth run that led to his People’s Choice Award
Brett Rheeder’s Best Trick and Runner Up placing in 2019 where he nailed a flat-drop foot can

“The 2019 site is the steepest and biggest zone out of all of them. It’s also super special to me, because my line there contains the biggest drop of my life,” said Red Bull athlete Szymon Godziek. “I am excited to come back and see if I can spin that huge drop!”

Men’s Broadcast: Saturday, October 12th at 12pm ET/9am PT on ESPN+ in the U.S. and on Red Bull TV in all other countries.

Highlight Shows: Two one-hour highlight shows will also air back-to-back Sunday, October 27th on ESPN2 with the women’s competition taking place at 5pm ET/2pm PT and the men’s competition taking place at 6pm ET/3pm PT.

The inaugural Red Bull Rampage was held in 2001, and since then, 17 different events and 9 different winners have earmarked their place in the history books. Only time will tell which riders will add their names to the list of illustrious champions this year.

I would assume that the women are getting the same ammount of time to go out and build their lines like the men do? I'm interested to see what they come up with, especially since they are getting a new sector for themselves.

just noticed something odd....

women's broadcast is slated for 9PM EST / 6PM PST while the mens is at 12 noon EST / 9am PST.  Reading between the lines I'm taking that the men's comp will be live broadcast whereas the women's will not.

my best guess is because it's a Thursday (weekday)? prior events they would live broadcast the men's on Friday then have the replay. not sure what it stopping that in this case.

it was stated that the men's & women's zones have separate starts and finish corrals. based i'm this i'm wondering / assuming they will have separate cameras etc for each zone.

For those of who had attended the event in person in prior years - how easy is it to get to the spectator zones when you're on the spot?  Do they limit the amount of people who can move to the specific spot so you have to arrive early to claim the space - or is it chill and you can roam freely?

I'm on non-VIP tickets.

Lucky you that got any ticket, I am flying from Peru and did not get one.  Still looking though - so if someone is selling a couple of tickets please let me know

It's been a few years since I went to one but the last one I went to they had areas set up for spectators. It is not the free for all that it was in the early years. We got there early and set up chairs for the day. Moved around a bit for some specific runs but mostly stayed in the same spot. Pretty easy to get to the spots and wasn't really too chaotic and not limiting of the number of people in the spot.

I had VIP so maybe GA is a little more restrictive. But given they limit the number of spectators, it isnt too crazy

It's kind of his bread and butter, right?  Building sketchy shit at his house and in Utah.  I hope the judging gets sorted and they give him the credit he deserves.

The Rampage broadcast shows you the dramatic final moments of the event, but it doesn't paint a full picture for the viewer. The stories that unfold in the weeks prior to those final moments often go untold; this film aims to tell those stories.

'Piece by Piece' follows Alex Volokhov's journey through Rampage 2023; the build, the teamwork, the stressful first hits, and everything in between.

Cinematography/Editing: Liam Morgan
Starring: Alex Volokhov
Presented by: Evoc Sports
Build Team: Quinn Hanley, Kris Mcmechan
Featuring: Alex Volokhov, Kris Mcmechan, Quinn Hanley, Kurt Sorge, Vicktors Vilks, Dave Satanove, Chris 'Dude' Woiken, Sophie Volokhov
Additional Shots: Jules Langeard, Redbull, Quinn Hanley
Crash Photos: Matt Bruhns
Music: The Blaze, Dope Lemon

I guess now that he is retired from racing, freeride is his main focus. Also they probably told him the location etc, so he knew what he would need to build and ride.

I wonder if he will run the Rock + canyon flip line again, it is one of my favourite lines across all rampages, but never seemed to score well.

I've been to Rampage a couple of times, and never had a ticket.  In my experiene there's a parking lot and a spot where they're checking tickets before you hike in to the venue.  The venue is pretty far away from the parking lot.  I just walk a quarter mile away down the road and hop a fence and then walk to the venue with everyone else who just went through the gate. It's in the middle of the desert, so it's pretty easy to work out.  I don't try to get into the VIP areas, but I've never had anyone ask for my ticket/wristband once I got on site.  Bring a big hat, a lawn chair, lots of food and water and brewskis.  Rent a convertable from the airport in Vegas. Mix in a day in Vegas on each end for some blackjack and you've got yourself a sweet road trip

It's an amazing show.  Seeing it in person is absolutely crazy.  It defies logic how gnarly it is.
