I thought he was injured a couple of weeks ago? I'm pretty sure he didn't start the last 2 races.

That crash by Erice is hard to watch. That's her second bad wreck this season. After her crash in Leogang she came back two weeks later to get a 2nd at Val di Sole. Fingers crossed, hoping for no serious injuries in this one.

as much as I'm done with all the complaining about UCI and the coverage that's pretty good.

Third, she got airlifted after a non race crash in the break before worlds. Hope she's ok.

Side of her head and shoulder laced that horizontal post in the ground pretty hard.
Strange crash...she screamed before she went off the drop like she'd lost her brakes.

Correction.  Looks like her foot clipped the log upon entry into the shoot and kicked her forward and off balance.

Canadian Cycling Magazine says:

"Junior world champion Erice van Leuven had a big crash in practice, leaving the mountain via helicopter. Her Commencal Les Orres team has since confirmed the champ is OK."

(No indication of what "OK" means, but hopefully it includes "no broken bones and no concussion.")

Injury count this year seems off the charts compared to years past.

Im sure the more competitive field in both mens and womens has some to do with it. But it's also hard to ignore the addition of Semi's and also the pending 2024 team implosions that must be putting more pressure on riders to have strong 2023 results.

Dean Lucas was saying on his trackwalk vlog that he has dropped over 70 places in the standings. He scored quali points at Loudenvielle, but has been overtaken by Brendog who didn't qualify.

What a shitshow.

Edit; I misunderstood what he was saying. It's his plate number that has dropped by 70 places, putting him into b practice. If my understanding is correct, the reason Brendog has jumped him as far as plate numbers are concerned is apparently because riders have been put in alphabetical order. Doesn't seem to make much sense to me, so I'm sticking with it being a shitshow.

At the risk of being downvoted his form this season is poor with plenty of younger riders and privateers more focused, driven and having a better attitude to training, racing, etc

Dean is siting way back in 83 position in the World Cup Series this year. Hasn't qualified for any of the finals, only qualified for 2 semis this season and he wasn't selected for the Australian World Champs Team due to poor form/attitude.

The UCI rankings only use the results in the last 12 months and currently he has no UCI points as his performance in the last 12 months is poor. Only racing the world cups, and the Australian Championships where he hasn't picked up points due to the results hasn't helped his cause.

Yes, he's not where he was a few years ago for sure. He has scored points this year though and seems to be further down the start list than others who haven't.

Looking at the lower echelons of the start list (from 138 down) the UCI ranking stops. There are riders who show up in the WC standings who are starting behind others who don't (for instance Sascha Kim is 74th in the standings and is starting last, but Kaos Seagrave is starting before him and as far as I know hasn't done any racing this year outside of Hardline) Is it due to UCI points that are collected in other races, but not shown on the start list? I can't make any sense of it.

Qualifying start order is in accordance with Chapter XI of the UCI MTB Rules.

The start order for the qualifying round is determined as follows:
A. men elite, women elite:
1. riders ranked in the top 60 men and the top 15 women of the most recently published UCI World Cup standings (for the first event, as per the final world cup standings of the previous year), starting in reverse order.
2. as per the most recently published UCI DHI individual ranking.
3. unclassified riders: by drawing lots

Dean is outside the top 60 world cup standings and has no UCI DHI individual ranking. Hence he falls into the the random ordering of the the unclassified riders in the qualification starting order.

The UCI Ranking runs through to 671 riders (all riders who have at least 1 point).

Filtered by Australia Dean isn't to be seen with no UCI points.

image-20230908200350-2

Dean's 16 points for the World Cup Series overall (which don't add to the UCI rankings) came from his 44th position at the last round. Sascha Kim has 20 points from his 40th position in round 3's semi final.

Rightly or wrongly World Cup Semi Final's don't give UCI points which are what the UCI Rankings are based on and how entries to the World Cup are based on if a riders is not on a team.

Thanks for the explanation.

I really hope so.  Of course much rather see him between the tape but he did a killer job last week.

Anyone know what effect Nina's DSQ has on her being able to start in the semi-finals? She's protected, but I can't find anything in the rules that says anything about what a DSQ means for the next round of the same event.

To the best of my knowledge, as long as she started her qualifying run, she should be in the semis.

Anyone knows if Hemstreet is injured? She has been off the pace a bit at the last few races, compared with being on winning pace in Val di Sole.

Josh Carlson did a good job with CG for the U19's. He may get a run for the Elites as well.

Mariana Salazar returns to racing in Les Gets! If you don't know, she was diagnosed with cancer a year ago, right after the race in Les Gets. She is finally able to return to racing after being a course sweeper at french national champs. Really this is the best news of the all week! Her fight went completely under the radar,  I feel she deserves some recognition.

Dean Lucas qualifies 56th.

Kaos Seagrave 141st.

Bodie Heflin 150th. (Pretty sure Bodie's the young guy who tried to register at Loudenvielle but they didn't allow it. He was mentioned in the race talk thread last week.)
