That's going to be interesting with the double DH races at Whistler. I wonder if we see any athletes specializing in a specific race or if most will be doing the double header. It will make for an interesting mixup to the points, where 33% of the DH points will be available in the last event of the season.
That also means that there are a ton of UCI points available in the middle of the WC season, with 60 UCI points presumably to the winner of each Whistler DH. That means that if somebody is able to win both Whistler DH races, they will receive the equivalent to a 2nd place in Men's or Women's elite at a world cup, which is a significant amount to bring into the team ranking for the end of the year. I think it's likely we see even more big names at that race than this past year.
Personally I'd have loved to see the Whistler double header but one is on 1199 and the other is the return of the monster: Garbo DH. Send it down the OG track at the end if you like. Scheduling wise it is interesting, I'm assuming it's going to be back to back to back DH races for just shy of three weeks in a row. Silver star first weekend, OG DH race second, and 1199 last.
What I'm reading Dante is that the Whistler stops don't yield UCI points, only the ones in the southern hemisphere and at Silver Star.
Ah yes, nothing says "OG" like removing letters. Personally I'd have loved to see the Whistler double header but one is on 1199 and the other is...

Silver Star is HC level points and top 5 go to a World Cup. The other races are lesser points. OG is Class 3 and Canadian Open is Class 1 UCI points

Or maybe there could be a South American continental series and a North American continental series. South American can be November to march and North American can be march to September. Better yet make it so the 5 qualifier spots can only go to you for racing your home continent.

If it means that there would be a good proportion of South American and North American riders qualifying for the WC, it's the right thing to do.
Natural Selection Bike New Zealand pre-quali'd athletes announced

Who Will Drop into Natural Selection Bike Aotearoa New Zealand? 13 Prequalifed Riders Announced Today
Storch, Brown, Downs, Armstrong, and Boggs are among the prequalifed riders to compete in Tāhuna Queenstown. They’ll be joined by nine wildcard riders and four dream track qualifiers for the finals on February 15.
Tickets are now on sale to see the action live on February 15. Finals to broadcast on Red Bull TV and more starting March 5.
Mt. Dewar, TāhunaQueenstown, New Zealand (December 23, 2024)--Today Natural Selection Tour releases the first group of riders for the inaugural Natural Selection Bike Aotearoa New Zealand, including some of the most skilled and progressive mountain bikers in the world planning to drop in for the international event. Natural Selection Bike will be held on the iconic Mt Dewar in Queenstown on February 15 and broadcast “as live” on Red Bull TV and YouTube on March 5 in North America and Europe (March 6, NZT). The competition will feature a 26 riders including 16 men and 10 women in a venue that blends three of the most dynamic disciplines in mountain biking into one run: downhill, slopestyle, and freeride.
“The concept of NST Bike is a new direction for the sport of Freeride, borrowing from several aspects of the sport. The terrain was selected for the natural features that are present, with big mountain natural features and flow, that is being augmented to create a big mountain freeride park with huge drops, shark fins, doubles and step ups,” explains Todd Barber, head of NST Bike. “The athletes being selected for the competition are a mix of big mountain and slopestyle athletes that will meld together to create a new direction for Freeride competition. Athletes will be required to compete on two separate and unique lines and will receive a combined score, another first for Freeride.”
Brett Rheeder returned to competitive mountain biking in 2022 at Proving Grounds to take the win, but since retired from competition for a second time. That puts Dylan Stark whose second-place finish went viral with 33 million views worldwide from the event in the top spot. “I’m really looking forward to Natural Selection in New Zealand,” says Dylan Stark, professional Freerider and 2025 Natural Selection Bike invitee. “New Zealand is a place I’ve wanted to visit, a bucket list riding destination, and now to get to ride the biggest freeride competition on such a rad course…stoked!”
One of New Zealand’s top female mountain bikers, Queenstown’s Vinny Armstrong, is the first Kiwi named to compete, with more expected to be named in the second lineup in January. She says she’s looking forward to competing in front of a home crowd. “It’s so cool to have an event like this coming to our backyard,” said Armstrong. “The rider lineup is strong, there are some amazing athletes set to compete and the track is going to be epic, so it’s going to be a great event.” Cami Nogueira, who took first in Prineville cleanly landing one of the most massive drops in the course for a clean line and Casey Brown, who took second in Prineville with precision riding including tricks peppered throughout are the top two prequalifed riders on the women’s side.
Stay tuned to @naturalselectionbike in January as the next round of riders will be announced; nine wildcard men’s and women’s rider invitees chosen by the NST Bike Selection Committee. Then the final four riders will come from the Natural Selection ‘Dream Ticket’ qualifier at the world-famous Dream Track in central Queenstown on February 7. There local talent will compete for the final rider spots to compete at the Natural Selection Bike final on February 15.
Formerly known as Proving Grounds, the competition is now part of the Natural Selection Tour and called Natural Selection Bike, which is expanding from its snowboarding roots to include mountain biking, surfing, and skiing. This will be Natural Selection’s first event in New Zealand.
Event Director Sophie Luther says the venue is on course for its February debut. “The track the Elevate Trail Building team is working on is a world-class mountain bike course. It is looking epic and it’s going to make for an amazing event in February. We’re urging mountain bike and sports fans to grab their tickets as the event will sell out.” In addition to Dream Ticket on February 7, the World Mountain Bike Awards will be held in Queenstown on February 12, creating a full week for the mountain bike community to gather.
Natural Selection Bike is proudly sustainable, with the competition aiming to be New Zealand’s leading ultra-low emission sporting event.
The New Zealand Government is supporting Natural Selection Bike Aotearoa through its Major Event Fund and will showcase New Zealand as a world-class mountain bike destination through the global broadcast. Natural Selection is proud to partner with Mons Royale, adidas FiveTen, Canyon Brewery, POC, and A New Earth Project. For partnership opportunities please contact conor@naturalselectiontour.com.
Tune In: Can’t make it to Queenstown? No problem! Catch all the action from Natural Selection Bike on Red Bull TV, YouTube, and other major broadcasters when the event premieres on March 5, 2025 (March 6, 2025, in Australia/New Zealand). Don’t miss the chance to witness the world’s best riders take on one of the most challenging and beautiful courses ever built.
About Natural Selection Tour Founded by snowboard legend Travis Rice, the Natural Selection Tour is dedicated to showcasing the world’s best riders competing on innovative, natural venues. The Tour has evolved to include mountain biking, skiing and surfing. With Natural Selection Bike, we are now witnessing the evolution of freeride mountain biking on a global scale. Natural Selection strives to inspire a deeper connection with nature while pushing the boundaries of sport.
Really curious to see how NST MTB pans out. I've been a huge fan of Natty Select the past few years, mostly due to the head-to-head format and raw terrain. I guess with how precise slopestyle has become, and how gnarly and set-in-place lines have become at Rampage, this type of event leaves a bit more room for riders to send big tricks and get loose (unlike slope) without the entire focus being around one drop like many runs have became at rampage.

Excited for that Solitude stop. Technically knew about the dates a few weeks ago and got the whole weekend off as soon as I found out. 🤭
Stoked on the Solitude race! But, unless they use two lifts the total ascent of the current bike park lift (Moonbeam) is like 600ft. I've been scratching my head on how they're going to run this race, does anyone have details?! I raced there and my time was like 2:30s and I'm slow af.

That’s not much shorter than ride rock creek. A few hundred feet shorter than mountain creek. Gotta start somewhere.

From what I've heard - they're running a little extra above and then down into the park trails for '25, but '26 they'll have a track off the Sunrise (I think?) lift which is getting replaced. They may potentially still build the track they have planned this year and shuttle riders up, just depends on budgets. Nothing really will be decided place until April/May when things start to dry out.
Could someone please explain? Never heard of that racing discipline.
It’s like an enduro stage but only one, rather than being stages, and it’s timed like a DH race. Depending on the organizers the race could be even more pedally than an enduro stage, or just a dumbed down DH course designed for all mountain bikes. Personally I’ve raced a couple in the past few years at ECCC collegiate races when they couldn’t get enough marshals to run a full enduro.

Exactly. These were a more modern take on original Repack type races but with modern (for the time) bikes like current the enduro bike. First ones I remember doing were late 90's. The first Norba national championships for Super D was in Mammoth, CA and stared off the old Kamikaze course. Was like 28 minute run or so. Think that was 2000.
Super D's were also either mass start or timed start like an enduro or DH now. Some mass start had a Le Mans start where you en mass ran to your bikes, jumped on and all raced crazy style like a current Avalanche type race. The current Avalanche type races are the closest thing to what Super D was. Needed a good burly bike/tires but had to pedal well also.

Ah yes, nothing says "OG" like removing letters.

Mt. Dewar, Tāhuna Queenstown, New Zealand (December 23, 2024)--Today Natural Selection Tour releases the first group of riders for the inaugural Natural Selection Bike Aotearoa New Zealand, including some of the most skilled and progressive mountain bikers in the world planning to drop in for the international event.
Today’s rider announcement includes 11 male and female riders who prequalified through their top finishes at Proving Grounds in Prineville in 2022. Another two riders, Barb Edwards and Kurtis Downs earned their spot at NST Bike at Proving Grounds Pacific City hosted by Carson Storch in 2023.

Solitude! Been too long since there was a big DH race in Utah.
3 weekends in a row to round out the big dawgs race season. Killington, Whiteface, MSA
..how much vacation time can I save til then 🫠
Excited for that Solitude stop.
