To be fair, the way those pages are split, I thought the same thing.

But .....that's what happens if you don't live on instagram

Really interesting that times are so close on 2 different machines.. maybe some food for thought than maybe our current DH bikes are still far from where they could be. Especially on steeper tracks.. DH bikes could have 12 inches of travel, 4 inches wide tires, and different geo (longer wheelbase, higher stack....some numbers are already similar between mx and dh). it seems that the range of what is usable for DH racing is bigger than what the industry is playing with..

I have no doubt DH bikes could get a lot faster on tracks with no pedaling. Huge, thick tires, massive suspension, stubby cranks that are basically pegs, etc.

But is that what we want? Would that be more fun? Would the higher speeds be worth it

If things start going that route I’d be in favor of tight equipment rules mandating that DH bikes stay like “traditional” DH bikes. Allow innovation, but keep the spirit of the sport.

Or just keep a pedally section on every track 😈

I have been watching Race Tapes and have listened to a PB pod with a couple of the crew from Beat Box.  Clearly, they are going for the Drive to Survive documentary vibe.  I hated almost all the episodes. I really don't like the style of storytelling and thought the episode with Finn was pretty cringy. It was also very "inaccurate" for the sake of telling a story. I hope that DH racing never goes to the places that F1 is.  I just don't want something I love to be misrepresented, or cheapened to broaden the audience.  Do we need good guys and bad guys, it's not the WWF!  I liked the FastLife series but this just seems like we are going in the wrong direction. Wondering if others are feeling the same way?

Good to hear. I’m not really interested in a media landscape where every sport is trying to do their own version of drive to survive.

I agree with your overall sentiment and felt much the same when I listened to the podcast on PB with the Boombox (or is itBeatbox?) crew. That being said, I found Race Tapes entertaining... but it's also basically manufacturing a story for entertainment value vs. telling the authentic stories that actually exist but might require more insider knowledge and in-depth reporting to uncover.

Instead, it's like: let's tell this story of old vs. young in Greg vs. Jackson. Then tell a story of young gun struggles and has to learn to mature in Finn. Then tell a story of best friends, one of whom is stuck in the other's shadow in Loris and Loic.

They just look at these storylines and then create and enhance them through judicious editing, whether they're actually there or not.

Is Miranda on a team this year?

Sorta, but not really? She's supported by SRAM, but does whatever she wants, when she wants. Works with Lael to do a big bikepacking ride, races some enduro, does some DH, all on bikes from whatever brand she wants to try. It sounds like a really sweet gig, to be honest.

I mean honestly 200+ mm bikes probably don't pedal much worse then 200mm setups. I think its more about pump speed ability. That said I wouldn't mine 9" - 10" bikes being common again with forks to match. Us slow weekend rider lot wouldn't mind the cushion. I'm certainly not expert speed through turns anyway nor worried about pumping every roller hard to build speed and my old creaky body likes cushy bikes so I can still ride rough / fast stuff and not feel like death at days end. .

Sea Otter Dual Slalom: Cool to see Blenki still has plenty in the tank, crazy to think he can hang with the best in DH, Enduro and DS.

Race tapes: after the podcast they said their favourite episode was Loic vs Loris, it was a nice episode which also served as a 2023 race series recap so I didn't bother watching other episodes. I also learned that Loris didn't tell Loic he was leaving the team, so maybe things were not quite as rosy between them as the episode makes out.

DH is the coolest thing ever, we don't need more fake drama added on top. Especially since now that we don't get a VITAL SLIDESHOW to give us the straight facts before, during and after the race!!! #bringitback

Yeah that sounds pretty dialed to me.  Race the fun stuff and then just ride your bike a bunch.  She's earned it!

Nik vs. Nik - winning runs from slalom this weekend. The track looked so technical!

Any news on how the Champery dh track is shaping up? From Google maps I can only see the new finish line.

Man...would it kill them to raise the start to give folks a little "rolling speed"?
Places plan 364 days for a big slalom then set the dudes on flat ground.  Like nobody owns a cinder block or some 4x4 posts?

That's the biggest respect I can give to Rock Creek & Windrock's DH start gates...maximum elevation start ramps.

They've got plenty of drop right at the start. Was standing next to the gate during the races.

I was asking people last week at the Otter who they thought would win each category in Fort Bill. Admittingly, my knowledge of the junior fields was pretty crap, but I heard the Alran brothers brought up a few times. I'm putting together notes now for a pre-race podcast, so figured I'd put them on everyone else's radar before Vital Fantasy kicks off.

What are some other names in the junior women's/men's fields that will be new this year to watch for next week??

May not be as steep as Rock Creek or Windrock's Start gates but by no means flat. There's gopro effect in that video for sure.

So during my few hours of research and pre season prep today I stumbled upon Tyler and was like how the hell have I not heard of this kid! Spomer is gonna fire me for not knowing about him 😂

I couldn’t confirm if he’d be at Fort Bill, but I’m assuming he will be?

To be fair he’s a 16 year old that lives on the other side of the world.

which is probably the most exciting thing about dh racing right now.  Three continents in men  men and 4 continents in women have who could be the next big thing.  And with the resurgence of stronger national/continental/regional series those who take a little longer to mature can still carve a path to make biking a career.

the future is bright and should only get brighter.

You clearly need to be like the rest of us and spend less time working and more time in the forum!

Some of the posters here have been tossing Tyler’s name out for a while as basically the Southern Hemisphere Asa.

BTW: shout out to you on the Sea Otter podcasts. Those were highly entertaining and really informative. I know they’re a pain to do, and you might not get a lot of feedback on them, but they were great.

Seems like you need to watch the Crankworx Rotorua DH from this year, lots of good stuff in that race.

You actually get paid to do this? Laughing

I should have known all my answers would be in previous tabs of this forum or Team Rumors lol

Don’t get me wrong, I love racing. But with a decent amount of my “work” related to racing these days, I do try to put it to the side a decent amount during the off season just so I come into the first round all giddy and stoked like everyone else. But now I feel like I’m cramming for a test getting ready to record a pre-race podcast tomorrow 😂

Stoked you enjoyed the Otter Pods! They were something different and fun to do.
