So when the contract ended with Trek, do you think there was no companies willing to take the whole team on so they started their own brand, or am I just thinking about this too much?
Too much? Doesn’t seem like you’re thinking about it at all,
The Athertons have gone out to a prolific bike designer/inventor, a major investor and a manufacturer and managed to put something together in a few months... that’s not the sort of thing that happens off the cuff. This is a very well considered model and I wish them the best of luck.
Is Millie confirmed to still be on their team? I saw it somewhere on this unwieldy thread but can't be bothered digging through all the crap to find it. Pretty fucking awesome of the Atherton's IMHO. So much risk, but such a cool direction to go for them with what looks like a genuine disruption of the industry. Agruably the most combined sharp end WC knowledge from a male/female perspective coming from Gee and Rach. And Gee is straight up the gnarliest racer out there, been around for so long, crashed so hard so many times, and as shown at the end of last season, still has so much left in the tanks.
As I mentioned a couple of days ago Mille has commented on IG that she will continue with the Athertons. Not known whether still on the Academy or full factory.

Perhaps a bit too much credit to the Athertons? Long time friends with the guys at Robot Bike Co, who worked with Dave Weagle. Become a new brand with a new name, add investor. Genuine disruption? Or scale up something that already existed? Dunno.

Edit: Total Atherton (Robot) Bikes team disruption of manufacturing a bike. Atherton's certainly putting their necks out on a new bike brand with a completely different process. Either way, stoked to see how the bikes turn out and how big the brand can grow. And doubly stoked to see how fast they can make them go at the World Cups.
I think the bike in the Piers Linney video is the "stock" Robot Bike Co R160 with a Fox 49 bolted on. You can see from the tyre that the rear wheel is a 27.5 and the lug joining the top/seat tubes says "R160". I don't think they're giving any secrets away yet.
Really cool project and I hope it goes well for them.

How about a smooth fit? I have no clue how well Robot Bike Co. was doing, but I dare assume that the Atherton name carries a bit more notoriety than the initial one, so why have two names doing the same thing? Only to cannibalize themselves? Dave Weagle is a proven name. I also remember Ed from the good days when Dirt Mag was still around and he was tech editor and his work there was ace too. The financial side looks to be taken care of. The Athertons carry a huge pedigree. Looks like a good assortment of ingredients for a success recipe to me!
Just like that the video is no longer available on youtube. Should have watched it an hour ago.

Video showed movement into a formal sit among those tailoring the look of having a brand. The 50's era paint on screen-capture of bikes were just templates for logo placement and unique finishing to 5 individual ones.
Very well done but could be mistaken as true to size grounding of the Brand.
Always liked Gee, Rachel and Dan. Glad to see some long-term plans other than another paycheck for the sake of open slots to fill.
Not just atwill, but the rest of the propain dirt squad? The kerrs were no slouch and young talent with a good future. I feel like Ben ried might continue a development program (legend) and if the kerrs aren't picked up by someone else they'll be back on Orange frames??

Feel old yet?
