If you follow the motocross scene at all, you've likely seen 6D's helmet on top of several of the fastest racers. At Sea Otter they introduced a new model to suit the needs of mountain bikers.
What makes 6D helmets unique is their Omni-Directional Suspension (ODS) technology, which uses a stretchy polymer to suspend an inner liner within an outer EPS shell. This allows the inner liner to move in any direction, hence the 6D name. Check it out in action in this video animation:
The system reduces load threshold energy transferred to the head as well as managing angular acceleration - something most traditional helmet designs don't really consider. The gap also serves as an air channel.
At 1,350 grams, the ATB-1 Carbon is 150 grams lighter than their moto helmet. Availability is just a few months away, and some high-level MTB racers are already making the switch. These helmets belong to KHS Factory Racing's Kevin Aiello.
