Go for broke or play the long game? Regardless of strategy, the first day of racing during the first Enduro World Series of 2018 proved to be a challenge. High in the arid, barren mountains of Lo Barnechea, Chile, competitors fought dust, rocks and unpredictable lines as they raced the clock in the first three of six stages. Sam Hill and Cecile Ravanel emerged from dust victorious, but as Sam said, they're only half way to getting the job done.

Enjoy a trackside seat as Sven Martin takes us to the race in Chile with his photographs and candid rider interviews.

Sam Hill with the afterburners on. He took the win on the grueling stage 2, the longest in EWS history and was 2nd, narrowly behind Richie Rude on stages 1 and 3. -Sven Martin
Cecile Ravanel with almost a minute lead after 32 minutes of racing with a triple sweep today of the stages today. -Sven Martin
Adrien Dailly second on the day with two 5ths and a second. He's continuing to build on his success at a young age. -Sven Martin
Richie Rude scorching on stage one with the stage win, less than a second ahead of Hill. -Sven Martin
Richie Rude rode most of stage two and all of the liaison with a front flat. That's almost twenty kilometers. He went on to win the next stage after getting it fixed in the pits. Could you do that? -Sven Martin
Richie with a hard liaison but soft tire. That look, though. -Sven Martin
Isabeau Courdurier second today. In fact the top three is exactly like they finished last year. -Sven Martin
Martin Maes has his eyes on the long prize and is playing the patience game, seeking the overall victory. Sitting in 3rd after a brutal day is a fantastic start to that agenda. Photo by Kate Ball / Enduro World Series
Katy Winton about 1/3 of the way into stage two. Just look at all the rocks. -Sven Martin
Robin Wallner with a great start sitting in fourth today. Navigating rocks, dust and fans on the way to a stage two finish. -Sven Martin
Neer and Dear to Vital's hearts, Shawn Neer sitting in sixth overall. Yes sixth. What a result! -Sven Martin
When Richie Rude plays around you know his spirits are high. Out of the race for an overall but out to take stage wins. Two today out of three today. -Sven Martin
Marco Osborne sitting in Top 10 from a good stage two. He loves the long, hard stages. Those wheels look a little bigger than normal to us, but maybe it's just the angle of the photo. Maybe. -Sven Martin
Start of the very first stage of the 2018 EWS season and it's a scenic one. -Sven Martin
Scott Countryman lays one over on a surface that feels a lot like racing Mammoth Mountain in California. -Sven Martin
Keegan Wright at the top of stage one rolling to 31st on the day. -Sven Martin
Josh Carlson with a suspected broken finger after getting caught in the dust of the rider he caught. He still finished in the Top 10. -Sven Martin
Josh Bryceland early in the day before taking a knock on stage three, sadly having to withdraw. -Sven Martin
Flo Espineira representing Chile sits in a commendable seventh place so far in Pro Women. -Sven Martin
Sam Hill coming into the hardest and steepest part of stage two after 11 kilometers of racing, finishing over 8 seconds up on the 18-minute stage. -Sven Martin
A marked man. -Sven Martin
Cool Chile themed mudguard for Adrien Dailly. -Sven Martin
Adrien Dailly's tires of choice. -Sven Martin
Sure, it's a great way to start the season but it's just the beginning of a long year of racing ahead. -Sven Martin
Lots of the this happening in the pits after the first two stages. Sparky sees to McKay's wheels as McKay gets honest. -Sven Martin
El Pollo Loco -Sven Martin
Tough stories and struggles from day one. Fresh off a good showing in the NZ enduro, Kiwi Charlie Murray snaps his rear brake hose right near the top of stage one. He soldiered on the rest of the day with just one brake just so he could ride again tomorrow. -Sven Martin
Eddie Masters with a third on stage one! What a boss, hanging it out in his race run. -Sven Martin
Joe Nation takes care not to fall off a cliff on three. -Sven Martin
Oton, Scott and Graves catch up with each other and check out the results so far on my phone. -Sven Martin
Last man to leave the feed station after consuming about 5 oranges. Dailly fuels the fire. -Sven Martin
Go on, say it. I know you are thinking it. Foot-out, flat-out and pinned into Sunday. -Sven Martin
The sunsets here are simply unreal. There will be more fire as the race concludes on Sunday. Stay tuned for the results and action right here! -Sven Martin
