I hope guys like Kyle keep getting invited and keep the event from becoming a total trick bonanza. I personally would rather see Straight throw a suicide no hander on a massive drop than see someone whip a cashroll on a dh bike. but thats just personal preference i guess

Prize purse is too small. Disc golfers should not be winning more than these mofos. Winner should get 500 grand at least.

Don't knock disc golf. It is fun as hell, and the perfect come down after rowdy riding. But yes, there is no doubt the Rampage prize purse is not commensurate with the risk the riders take.

i understand your thinking and get it based on the risk, but the truth is this segment of bike riding is so small and only really attracts other mtb riders. disc golf is huge in comparison which most anybody can get into for less than $50 and enjoy themselves at. it draws a larger audience and has a larger subset of people participating.

rampage is a Red Bull Signature Series event. it gets network TV broadcast, albeit it just the highlights of final runs i believe. in the US the only mtb event that might get more widespread network coverage is the Olympics.

Tender berries: If I was knocking disc golf I would’ve called it frisbee golf. Chill out, cargo shorts.
I’m saying Rampage is on some Isle of Man TT meets big wave surfing biz, and these riders should be rewarded with way more cash.

someone's a little grumpy about disc golf. my statement about coverage had nothing to do with disc golf, just that out of all the mtb disciplines and events, this is the one that gets the most mainstream coverage.

Yes! Rampage is the kind of thing that gets non-riders to watch, even non-action sports fans!

I have no truck with disc golf, it's cool. Just saw that there are tournaments wiht 140,000 payouts where Rampage is $100,000. That's unacceptable.

Although: the whole thing is at least slightly rigged, so I'll admit having a strong opinion on its fairness is kinda silly.

i agree w/ literally above

frolf (is that offensive? don't mean it to be) doesn't require helicopters, dozens of safety/medical staff, logistics with state and federal authorities, not to mention any other host of costs required to run an event like rampage. if disc golf and rampage both raised $1m to run their event, think of how much $$ is left for disc golf prize purse vs rampage after logistics.

in no way am i saying rampage athletes shouldn't be rewarded handsomely for their performances, but comparing it to other sport payouts (like video gamers) doesn't go far IMO. rampage may get more *views* than other sports or events if everything is added up, but for someone/some company putting money into a marketing effort in hopes of selling the viewer something, rampage may not be as sticky as we mountain bike fans think it is.

regardless, i'm already stressed for the riders and will be watching with my eyes half-closed on game day.

Red Bull rampage is played routinely on their main Channel and I’ve seen replays played on fs1. Only time I saw mtb in a sports bar.

update via red bull sent late last night (tuesday oct 11)
-----------------
The excitement continues in the desert as practice ramps up at the 2021 Red Bull Rampage. Sharing a recap of the first few days below, along with important info regarding the weather forecast and your media credential if attending the event:
IMPORTANT - Weather Delay: Due to the forecast of rain tomorrow morning (Wednesday), access to the venue will be restricted until the weather clears. We will notify you in the morning of the approximate time the venue will reopen by email.
Venue Access: Media credentials will allow you access around the mountain, top to bottom, from Tues-Thurs. Please note that beginning Thursday late afternoon, access to the mountain will be restricted to the middle road to allow riders to have full practice. This will remain in place on contest day with no top-of-the-mountain access for anyone without the appropriate pass.

Read below for more news from the mountain!

NEWS FROM THE MOUNTAIN

Last Wednesday, the 15 Red Bull Rampage athletes returned to Virgin, Utah, and broke ground on the 2021 competition site. The battered and eroded mountain was a familiar sight for the roster's many veterans, who competed here in 2016 and 2017. For the rookies, it was a blank canvas waiting for their fresh perspective. Regardless, everyone shared the same gut reaction about the imposing mountainside: It’s steep, exposed, and full of potential.

Excited, the riders hastily got to work, dispersing across the venue. In no time, many of the dilapidated run outs and jumps were brought back to life and nearly rideable in many sections. The momentum was poised to continue until a rainstorm on Friday brought work to a screeching halt. The precipitation, however, was a blessing in disguise. It rejuvenated the parched dirt, making it even more malleable. In the meantime, the athletes took their rest day early. On Sunday, they returned not only eager to dig but equipped with their bikes for their first official day of practice. After a productive half-day of slinging dirt, they padded up and began guinea-pigging parts of their lines. Steadily, they ticked off more and more features, gleaning as much as they could from the calm conditions before the sun dipped below the horizon.

Their collective success set the tone for today, which carried into a morning session before the sun had illuminated the course. Shaking off their nerves with each run, they rode until the wind picked up in the afternoon. While all the athletes still have plenty on their to-do lists, today showed that progress is heading in the right direction.

I did a little searching around (there was a rumor earlier in the year that he was back on Hyper) and I think you're right, the most recent substantive reports I could find were that YT didn't renew him.

He talks about it at length in a bike check vid on the other site, boils down to it being a better freeride bike pre-gwin, who turned it into a race machine (his words, not mine).

He didn't hold back when that deal fell through with YT and he even dissed the bikes, now he just looks like a fool if you ask me riding a blacked YT Tues!

Surely he could of tried and bought any bike in the world if he wanted or as a freerider do they really get paid that little ?

he might have a problem with the brand, not with that bike he knows how to ride.. simple to address..

He had a deal locked in with Hyper and then he dropped his homophobe nonsense on IG. Hyper and shimano dropped him on the spot. Rumor was that he is working on a frame of his own but who knows. Between the homophobia, the street racing stunt and the misogyny oozing out of Sensus I’m surprised the guy has any sponsors at all. Yes cancel culture is bullcrap but when a guy shows time and time again what trash he is he deserves the cancellation.

He reached out to fans and apologized for his behavior. What’s in the past is in the past and let’s see how he represents the sport from here. Personally it’s the public vilification of people’s mistakes that bothers me about cancel culture. Companies and people have every right to spend their money where they want. We all do and say things that we regret with hindsight. And generally that hindsight doesn’t come entirely internally or necessarily easily.

I don’t disagree at all with hyper or shimano’s decision to part ways, but I certainly hope the best for cam and his pals at sensus in the future and I see no reason anyone should wish differently.
