Just watched Juniors. Think this has to be the most boring race I've watched in terms of presentation. Either it's a dull track with no interesting features, or the camera angles and editing make it look boring. Ric and Cedric providing their usual background drone. Chris Ball is going to drive the fans away from the sport, and he certainly won't be attracting any new ones.

Cami Balanche DNF in qualifying after being "in the green" at first split. No idea why she DNF'd. At least she started, so I assume she's into the finals as a protected rider.

Vali looks like she's on fire again.

[Edit: Pretty long red flag on the course from the looks of it, based on the live timing. Hopefully it's not an injury situation.]

I really like the track actually. I just think camera placement is bad and cameras are mounted too low, but we also have to wait for elite finals to see more of the track. Mad speeds from the young guns as usual, with lower times than elites' time training for both Junior women and men!

Dang.  Seemed like vali is on fire but cami was keeping the overall fight a battle with her incredible consistency.  Hope it’s nothing too serious.  Lots of places on this track that are absolutely brutal to go down in.

Very tight times in men's qualis. 11 riders missed the cut by less than 1 second, and 24 by less than 2 seconds. I still feel like I prefer more technically difficult tracks that separate riders more. Super fast tracks like this invite more risk taking, and at the same time leave no room for mistakes, as there is just nowhere to make up time.

Apparently she crashed on the road gap, possibly caught a big gust of wind. The track was shut for 45 minutes. It doesn't sound good, I hope she's okay. Healing vibes Cami.

Edit; Possible broken hip.

I wish the people in charge of setting up the cameras would spend a bit of time watching Vital Raw and vlogs from the likes of MoiMoi and Ed Masters, they could do with learning about good spots to film from IMO.

That would work if they had 50 cameras on the hill if not w everyone would complain we see 10 seconds of a 2 min run. Their videos are great but they capture mere seconds which is not great for a broadcast.

Watching juniors they had cameras in similar spots, but somehow didn't manage to show the track in the same way. Also from a personal point of view I'd rather see key sections where time is lost or gained than watch a rider disappear down the track where you can see nothing of what they're actually riding.

It's not just about showing more of a rider's run, it's also about the vantage point that it's filmed from.

Anyone know if Eleonora Farina is okay as she's shown DNF.

Oh no…

Glad things aren’t worse, but “biggest crash of her life”  isn’t great. Best wishes for a full recovery for one of my favorite racers to watch.

This just in from the organizers:

-------------------------------------------

Communique - Extreme weather / change of schedule Saturday DHI

Based on the latest weather forecast from the national weather forecasting service, the existing schedule for the UCI Downhill World Cup tomorrow, Saturday 26 August will not be possible as planned due to extreme wind speeds.

This safety decision has been made by the UCI, WBD Sports and the local organisers to ensure the welfare of the athletes, teams, marshals, volunteers, spectators and everyone working at the event.

A revised race schedule will be agreed and communicated at 06:15am tomorrow morning following a final weather forecast review.

If racing goes ahead, the schedule will be as follows:

07:30am – 08:30am Training, WE & ME combined.

09:00am – Final WE, 17 qualified riders.

09:45am – Final ME, 61 qualified riders.

If a further deterioration of the weather is predicted to coincide with this revised schedule the event will be postponed for the day & further updates will be communicated as appropriate.

Please ensure your tents and equipment across the paddock area are secured for high winds and heavy rain, and that your personnel are all safe.

Having now seen BK's LSD channel footage, the track is fine, it's just the ESO/Discovery camera work that's shit.

Heard on a recent Downtime podcast (95% sure it was that one) Chris mentioned that the only camera crews ESO could get were *wildlife crews* who had NO idea how/where to position cameras or track riders...

Being wildlife crews, you'd like to think they could get some good footage of Daprela

I have to say I appreciate the organizers revising the schedule in hope of having a (safe) race. Any idea on how they would score points? Or will they just assign points 1st to 30th?

Is there any reason Brayton couldn't petition his national federation to race in the jersey? That's how a lot of riders in the US get the chance to race the WC when we live in a country that has almost zero UCI ranking points up for grabs. Most national federations have 5-7 jersey/petition spots available at any given round. I know Jason and I have both worn the USA jersey to race in the big show. I wonder if Adam's bad news from the UCI came in too late for him to jump through the emails and paperwork with British Cycling to wear the UK jersey. Crappy deal.

One would assume racing federations would have a list of qualified riders provided by the organization handing out the qualifying...UCI.  And thus they would notify those riders who are NOT qualified of eligibility criteria outside the points, especially when a new system is put in place so that EVERYONE can be on point.

But...who are we kidding.

Man....that is the crazy thing about downhill bikes.  You can tuck all you want, but since the wheels themselves are so light, wind can just sweep those spinning discs right out from under you mid air.

I would assume that the faster the speed of the wheels spinning, the harder a gust of wind can push on them to pitch the bike.

I'm old enough to remember when ESO said they were going to revolutionize downhill MTB with more cameras, drones, blah, blah, blah.

The reality ended up being a TV crew who has never filmed MTB and has zero experience.

The UCI is a clown show. The most recent Ed Bull Media House video sums it up nicely.

Can't believe we're paying for this stuff.

I don't think it matters much but my understanding is that this is all on the ESO right? The UCI handed them the keys for the next 8 years and said "have fun".

(Previously Red Bull owned the media and UCI owned the rules, now ESO makes the rules and owns the media rights except for World Champs).
