OSAKA, Japan – Recognizing rider demand for better heat dissipation, Shimano introduces the long-awaited addition of a 6-bolt rotor option with ICE TECHNOLOGIES FREEZA construction. Already proven in World Cup and EWS competitions this season with the Santa Cruz Syndicate and Rocky Mountain Race Face Enduro teams, the new RT-MT905 rotor delivers massive heat management benefits without increasing rotor diameter or thickness for the ultimate in lightweight, cooling performance.

Shimano ICE TECHNOLOGIES FREEZA rotors offer an incredible 150°C (270°F) reduction in heat build-up when compared to standard stainless-steel rotors. This allows riders to use smaller rotor options that offer greater ground clearance and lower overall weight, all while maintaining reliable, consistent braking performance under all conditions.

Earlier this year, Shimano responded to rider demand for greater heat dissipation at a high value price and added a larger 220mm stainless steel rotor option for CENTER LOCK and 6-bolthubs (SM-RT64/SM-RT66). Now, the catalog is expanded again with the new RT-MT905, allowing racers and riders requiring 6-bolt rotors to benefit from premium ICE TECHNOLOGIES FREEZA cooling performance and run smaller rotor sizes with even better levels of heat management. Why not do like Magura, thicker rotors? Yes, it adds some grams, but from my experience it works better than thinner rotors on long decents.

Yeah, it's kinda weird to me that Shimano is dragging their feet to release thicker rotors and bigger rotors. Everyone else is making 220+ rotors that are 2.0mm or thicker, but Shimano keeps making small/thin Icetech rotors and insisting "it's better." Why not both? Hard to imagine heavy e-bike riders complaining about 220mm 2.3mm thick Icetech freeza rotors. When braking, more is typically better, especially when it helps keep heat down in a mineral oil brake system that doesn't like getting cooked.

I know they offer the Deore level stainless rotor in a 220, so why not an Icetech or Freeza rotor? And especially given the fact that Icetech rotors like to bend and flake apart, doesn't seem like making them thicker would hurt, either.

I love CL especially for traveling with a bike. Sure it's a couple tools I have to bring but making building and disassembling bike a lot quicker. Having both options is always a good thing but yeah they normally put the best stuff out for CL initially.

The paint I assume is specially formulated to help disperse heat based on the wording not just any paint would accomplish that.

I really hope this means they're going to stop pushing center lock. And I say that even tho I have some cl wheels. Their hubs, rotors, would sell a whole lot more and be more attractive to oems if they just gave up on cl.

doubtful. i'd wager it's mostly because there's still enough aftermarket hub makers are only making 6 bolt hubs. centerlock is still under patent, so anyone making CL hubs has to license it from shimano. i know the CL patent has been around a while, anybody know when its up?

It says “heat dissipating paint” so I’m guessing it has some metal in it that helps draw the heat away from the breaking surface

Not sure on the composition of the paint, but it’s definitely not just a standard black paint. It’s something similar to what’s used on large metal industrial buildings to help regulate heat in summer and winter.

Use to have parts of my MX race engines painted with heat dispersent paints. On old air cooled engines the difference was huge. An air cooled MX engine would fall way off in power after 10-15 minutes of race unit but with this dispersent paint's on the cylinder & head, no difference throughout an entire moto.
I do wish they offered these in 160 for XC applications as I think that's the best place.

It's a thermodynamic thing. In the same way that a white car in the sun doesn't get as hot as a black car (because it absorbs less radiation from the sun), a hot black surface emits more radiation than a silver surface at the same temperature.

Hmmmmmm....may need to call Mythbusters or Veritasium.....but, black and white shed thermal energy at about the same rate, assuming that more energy (heat via light) is not being absorbed into the mass. caloric dissipation would be about identical...so, shall we say "Marketing"?

What? Where are you getting this information? It is pretty well documented phenomenon that dark colors emit heat more readily than light colors.

Here is an experiment you can do at home to prove it.

I suspect the Shimano paint also has other additives that make it better at radiative cooling. These may make even more of a difference than the color.

There is more to life than Wikipedia ;-)

The black and white lacquered faces emit approximately
equal amounts of infrared radiation.
The reason for this is that white and black only
appear as such within the visible light spectrum. If
only the emitted thermal radiation is observed,
which has longer wavelengths than visible light,
both the white and black faces appear as so-called
grey bodies; in other words, both radiate all wavelengths
within this range with equal intensity. By
contrast, the thermal emission of the metallic faces
is much weaker.

To that, your source seems to not let science get into the way of entry to their facility to check out many (fun) hypothesis...please notice, your example requires visible light during all experiments, thus, making the finding invalid in the bigger scheme of things :-) ...this however no bearing on my desire to get these rotors on my bike...if they only made a 160....

I think we are mostly in agreement. It is definitely the infrared spectrum that matters. I could have phrased it better. To my knowledge objects that appear black in the visible are more likely to emit better in the infrared, though with standard pigments the difference is fairly low. This is why the majority of radiative paints are black.

Yes, the white car doesn't get as hot because it reflects more. But that has nothing to do with how much heat it radiates on its own. The heat source is coming from the inside in this case: if you set fire to the inside of the cars, would the white car be any cooler on the outside, meaning less heat is getting transferred out of the system? Doubtful.
