Unfamiliar with that word. I know there is the sweeper prior to finals. What's a forerunner, Other than being an overpriced Toyota

A forerunner rides the course before the racers to make sure all systems are go. Things like the timing, the course marshals, and I don't know what else, maybe the cameras/video?
