-Excellent dampening
-Great rim protection
-Significant improvement in cornering and braking traction
-Doesn't absorb sealant
-Pretty simple install
My riding observations:
I've been running these for about 6 months, in Northern and Southern Utah on my Transition Patrol, and have come across very impressed. My typical set up is a Double Down or similar casing out back, with a lighter duty tire up front, and 28 Front /30 Rear for air pressure. With that same setup but with the inserts, I can safely run as low as 22 PSI front and rear, without worrying about rolling a tire or dinging a rim. For more natural trails I may be able to do a bit lower, but for me it starts to squirm a bit more than I'm comfortable with. The added cornering grip at these pressures is what really sold me on the inserts. I'll be the first to admit I'm not the best at cornering with speed, so having the extra help there has been awesome. Additionally, rather than searching out the smoothest lines, I'm more prone to pulling and praying as I come up short while trying to clear rock gardens. I don't get too much arm pump traditionally, but the amount of noticeable trail chatter has decreased.
The one caveat I'll speak to, is that it's getting more common to run full on DH tires on trail bikes, with the idea that it negates the need for any inserts for the added traction and comfort. I haven't tried this yet, but would be interested to. However, from a weight perspective, you're still better off running your normal tire casing with these inserts. They're crazy light for what they provide.
A few tech observations:
Tannus says this doesn't soak up sealant, and this is another side benefit. I swapped out my rear tire a couple days ago, and there was still a healthy amount of Orange Seal Endurance left over. You can't tell on the stock images, but the insert has holes every 6" or so to get the sealant in between the insert and the tire itself.
I've used these with Maxxis, Kenda and now Schwalbe tires, between 2.35 and 2.6, and Spank Traill Oozy 295 (25mm internal width) and Stan's MK3 (29mm internal width) and it does seem to mount a bit easier with the wider rim. The insert is pretty stiff, and having a bit of extra space makes the job a little easier, but by no means is it difficult with either rim.
Bottom line, these inserts are highly recommend, and at $50 each they can be significantly cheaper than other similar inserts, which is a nice bonus.
