Spank invested a lot of time and design effort into the new Spike stem. The goal was to produce a "gravity stem at an XC weight." Using FEA (Finite Element Analysis) they were able to determine that the majority of a stem's strength comes from the edges. By removing material inbetween the edges, they were able to drop the weigh subantially. The 35mm version weighs in right around 135 grams.
