On Thursday morning we all woke up to brilliant bluebird skies...and snow-capped mountains. The ski fields of Cardrona, New Zealand, had received enough snow for people to skin and splitboard up onto the hills and get some mid-summer pow turns in!
The majestic contrasting views of summer peaks capped in white was stunning, but concerning regarding the forth-coming National Championships penned in for the weekend. The XC was moved to a private trail network, but the DH track was looking hopeful. The trail crew posted up some photos on Friday showing a lot of rocks and Hero Dirt - just like that, the stoke was once again boiling over and riders were ready to shred. Once we all arrived at the hill on Saturday, it was clear the track was all-time and going to produce some sick riding. A venue known for being chaotically loose and dusty, overnight Cardrona became the place with the best dirt. Funny what a little mid-summer snow can do for a bike park...
As of this posting, the race day is almost underway and high winds have forced the lift to shut down. The course may be cut in half, which is a bummer. Enjoy the epic gallery from Zach Faulkner and stay tuned for more goods!
Pictured above - Classic Sam Blenkinsop style! He was hauling in practice. Could there be any reason he's going extra fast according to the internet?
