Amen! I was thinking the same thing. We could all go on and on about “sustainability” in the bike industry. News flash, There isn’t ANY!!! It is a market meant for you to buy something new every year, or even twice a year. Everyone of us is using rubber tires, that contributes to massive deforestation.

A “sustainable” bike company is a bunch of bull shit.

news flash buying a 10k bike, sprinter van, and some recycled riding gear or shoes doesn’t make you sustainable. It makes you an agent of capitalism. Want to be sustainable stop buying shit. Go to the junk yard meltdown old frames cast your own. Make all your own stuff from trash…..

this forum is so whack.

Good for everyone who sleeps so well at night for buying recycled Patagonia or an osprey pack with no “forever chemicals”. In ten years we will all hear how thenew PTFA free DWR coating will be even worse than it’s predecessor.

Just look at Sucralose and sugar.

Again this all such bull shit. Wanna talk real sustainably stop buying things and supporting capitalism.

We definitely shouldn't treat this cancer patient. Other people are still going to get cancer.

Medicine is all bullshit.

You obviously didn’t read my post. Your prob just burnt because your still paying the 30 year mortgage on your splinter van. While acting like your saving the planet.

Your assessment couldn't be further from the truth.

I live in 87 year old home in an old neighborhood within walking distance of downtown. Most of my shopping uses no bags and no receipts.

I drive a small hatchback from 2007 because the gas mileage is good, it's a smaller car so it's safer for those around me, driving it and keeping it in good repair prevents more stuff from sitting in a landfill, and I can fit my bike in by taking off my front wheel.

I repair my shoes if possible. I repair my pants if possible. I still have shirts from high school I wear during my rides. I own no mtb-specific clothing besides 510 shoes after my previous stash of non-mtb specific shoes have been chewed up by my pedals.

I buy as much of my produce as possible from farmer's markets. I haven't eaten meat since Feb 28, 2005.

I'm still reusing a plastic cup at my workplace from over a year ago when I bought an iced coffee from a locally-owned shop.

My other bikes are a 2009 Swobo Sanchez steel fixed gear and a 90s Raleigh single speed I got 3rd or 4th hand on a trade for beer I homebrewed. I worked at a brewery as the lead brewer for a while. I got out of the brewery I was at because they wouldn't implement better water-waste-reduction practices.

I know you're looking for someone to illustrate your "doth protest too much" fantasy. I'm not the person who can fulfill your search.

I agree with you that consumerism is THE problem with sustainability. I just don't think that anything gets better by throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Using practical sustainability measures now gets us to a place in which more people can adopt more sustainability practices as we move to the goal of more holistic sustainability. Dramatic, instantaneous revolution toward sustainability is impossible so we have to go the slow route. Every step along the way gets us closer.

There's always someone who swoops in with "nothing is sustainable" and "it's all bullshit." But what are they doing in their lives and their consumer choices? Saying things like how only never buying tires would be "sustainable" is such a cop-out.

Take an actual action. If you're going to buy tires, maybe buy used tires. Or look at the supply chain for a given company. Schwalbe recently joined Fair Rubber and are the only one to do so out of the main MTB tire manufacturers AFAIK. Counts for something. And is a better choice than just throwing your hands up.

I'm not sure about the rest of their operation, but I recently purchased some components from Paul and there was no plastic in any of the packaging, including the tape. Small gesture, but I appreciated it.
