Pretty sure this is 1998 or 1999. I was 14 or 15, and the relics aboard that dual slalom bike were awesome.
Nokian front tire- Actually worse than a Kenda
Hope rear disk with that thumb knob adjuster to adjust for heat, front v-brake that was super easy to set up because the braking surface on the Mammoth rim is like a mile tall. Speaking of that, I think that rim is the opposite of what some good wheels are doing now. More stiffness, deflection and weight in the front, flexy, crappy wheel in the rear.
That White Brothers fork needed butter every couple days to work well.
Best thing on that bike was the profile cranks. Every other square tapered BB snapped or bent when I was learning how to jump.
And my mouth was wide open because that's what Palmer did.
I'm not that old but I do miss my SWD Crazy-8 (ignore the unfinished cable routing though...)

This will date me. My last DH bike was technically an SWD. That dick from the company (Not Steven or Hank, the wannabe Jeordy guy.) ripped me off to the tune of $800 for one of the bad batch of frames that came out after Steven's death. The ones with XC geometry and DH travel. Hank, the stand up guy that he is, invited me to come to his shop and make a new front end for it that worked great and had modern geometry. Then I realized that the Bullit gen two swingarm that I had was a perfect match. So I welded in a shortened BB shell for the pivot and I have my last DH bike. SWD roots but no longer and SWD.

I do miss mine, paid like 700$ for the frame off the ridemonkey classifieds. It was like the only one in the world with a full 1.5" headtube. All my "cool downhill racer" friends from back then made fun of it because it looked tiny and they expected it to crack after one run (funnily, that was the year where they all bought norco team dh's that cracked). It was pretty much the smoothest bike I ever rode and it was really fun to ride. I thought about building a more recent/updated geo version of it but it's part of the 10000 plans I have that will probably never materialize. I sadly traded it for a high-end street bmx when I moved to Montreal... Oh well...
Everything was cooler back in the day, because we still rode BMX bikes. This is a mid-school thread really. Shit.... maybe I've become my grandparents?
I didn't know it at that time and overlooked the fact that my bike nook and collection would have been at Mountain Bike museum status today.
That one bike I almost wanted to steal at Interbike (or where it sat collecting dust at the Hayes HQ in WI).
I don't have too many if any old racing pics of me. Norba National at Snow Summit. 7th place in expert class with two crashes. Future was bright.. lol
Pic of The Martins (Anka & Sven - littermag/vital legends) back in their respective Pro DH racing days for attention.
Lastly, does anyone remember the backstory on why the Rocky Mountain trio dubbed themselves the "Froriders?"
Here's a clue.
Gonna watch Clappin Yo Dome tonight in the garage/bike cave with a print copy of Littermag on hand performing unnecessary bike maintenance for throwback good times.
I still have some mbaction magazines at home from like 2002 that predicted that "freeride will probably kill mountain biking" as a sport...
Oh well...
I've got a Nearly complete collection of Decline Magazine. Including the first issue with Gwin in the Free Lap article where they said something to the effect of "You'll be hearing this name again."

They were doing a US version of the British 1:04 track and he came along. I remember it so well
96 I think, at Killington. Riding a Gary Fisher, wearing Dyno pants and Specialized jersey!
Then 98 on my Spooky Metalhead at Seven Springs.

Sport Class. Age 25. Right after the turn, I EXPLODED my ACL coming to a stop at the finish when I put my foot down in a power slide finish and it went in a hole. Worst.
Palmer wrecking in Seven Springs Round of 8 & attempting to 360 the double. Got a pic of Shaums snapping his crank arm from way up the hill as he's landing downside, but it's worse than a video on Poltergeist.

Sport class 1994, water bottle and bar ends 😜🤘🏼🤙🏾
The idea that you think you need a special thread to be old here is heartwarming!
love the pics

Best thread ever.
Wait, what's the theme of this thread again?
