I ran an aggressor all last season. quite frankly I hated it overall. sure it rolls fast but I didn't think I provided that great of braking traction and severely lacked in corning with its hard rubber compounds. I switched to the DHF 2.3 in the back, but climbing isn't a concern of mine but even in a moist spring condition its certainly better and feel that it rolls better than a dhr2 or the aggressor.
I ditched the Aggressor 29x2.3 for a new Slaughter 29x2.3 Grid this week and had my first ride on it this morn.
I didn't realize the tire had been updated until I got home and went to install it. The tread pattern has been changed a tiny bit, no big deal. But the weight on the Grid model has dropped from 950g to 860g. Damn it, Specialized! That's what the Control casing is for you knob-gobblers!
It may have just been my imagination (let's hope), but the tire now feels closer to a Schwalbe Rock Razor (blue addix) in terms of support, which weighs in at ~800g. And that is a bad thing. Why the hell the Big S took a tire that was suitable for AM use and relegated it to Trail use is beyond me. F-you. Just F-you. The DH casing Slaughter is too damn heavy for "normal" riding so that's out for me as an option. Of course, this is after one ride. Hopefully it holds up as well as the old Grid version but I swear the tire feels less substantial than it used to, which is a bad thing for us riders who want fast rolling, great cornering, but some support too. So time will tell and even IF durability is on par with the old version, I hope i'm not bottoming more and breaking traction in corners more due to the flimsier side wall.
Once again, thank you Specialized for making an awesome tire. But F-you for ruining a good thing. Also, I'm open to trying a 29x(gasp)2.4/5/6 if you feel like pulling your heads out of your arses.
I would suggest looking at the Vittoria Morsa. I was riding it last summer on the back in order to fit the same bill - fast rolling with good cornering (and actually just put it back on a couple of days ago for this summer). The center thread is relatively short and it rolls really well (comparing it to the DHR2 3C MaxTerra that I run in the spring/autumn). It has a better braking that what the looks may suggest and leaning on it's side, it holds the edge very well.
Up front I run a Magic Mary all year round and switch between the Morsa and the DHR for the back wheel. I have the TNT casing for the Morsa and I think it's stronger than the EXO on the DHR.
Any thoughts on the Maxxis Griffin specifically a 2.3 even more specific a 27.5x2.3 with the Double Down casing
I'll bite since no one else has.
Been running an EXO Griffin on the rear with a 2.5 Minion WT EXO on the front for 6-8 months? 27.5 on my trail bike. I'm in Australia, trail conditions here can be described as hard pack to moon dust to damn loose and rocky at the moment. Very dry.
It rolls fast, climbs decent, cornering it keeps up with the minion easily when leaned over hard and going fast, which is probably the bit I care about most. Braking is good in loose stuff, but if things got slippery (as in wet or muddy) i think it would be overwhelmed easily. It's wearing out relatively quick (for a Maxxis), but that's what back tyres do.
Would I buy another? Probably for summer yes. But I would maybe try get a harder compound, not sure if you can. Mine is a 3C Maxx-Terra. Winter, I think I will probably switch to something chunkier. e.g. a DHR II.

haven't ran these on the trail bike but on the dh bike I freaking love these tires. Hardpack, loose on hard pack or semi loose soil these thing kill. I like them more than minions in those conditions. loamy they aren't the best but they weren't designed for that. Ill probably get a set for late season riding here when things really really dry up.

The Griffin might be my favourite rear tire. It rolls fast, brakes well and corners consistently. I ran it in the 2.4 DH casing in 27.5 as it weighed as much as other DD tires in that realm. So you got the extra protection without a weight penalty.
