Just killed my strava account, of 5 years, this article prompted me to do so-shitty trails or not. I will try this training peaks app to track my pathetic 'training' haha.
Thanks for the insight people.
Cheers.
chances are if you are reading this you are probably not "the problem", nor do I think strava, or any ride tracking/sharing app is the problem in and of itself.
Irresponsible trail users who are rude and inconsiderate of the fact that a multi use trail is just that, are the problem. Hikers & equestrians don't care if we run ourselves off the trail, but when we lose sight of the shared nature of some trails then yes, we deserve to lose access.
There is nothing wrong with wanting to ride fast, but like any endeavor, know the time and place where it is appropriate. If you speed down the highway, you expect a ticket... If you want to drive fast you go to a race track. How/why should mountain biking be any different?
As for those claiming strava is bad because it shows the world where you ride... If you are riding bandit trail, you should consider the consequences whether you are tracked on strava or not. Tire tracks work just as well as strava for evidence, and per the above about being respectful, think about who the real jerk is... Is it the guys who invented strava, of the guy riding the trail he isn't supposed to?
Land access for any hobby is always a contentious issue, the best way to maintain and grow access, is to be respectful of other users and land owners. Lead by example, and don't be afraid to speak up to others who are not being courteous, or may be ignorant of the harm they are causing to the local user ecosystem through their behaviors. Turning a blind eye to bad users is almost as bad as being one...
As soon as you put a "cyclocomputer" or garmin or whatever on your bike....the fun is all over.
really? i ride with mine all the time and it takes no fun away from riding, if i want to push i can see the data and if i'm progressing or not, if i want just to be silly, gap every litle jump or go back up and ride a section again i simply don't look at it. it is just what you make it, if you are distracted by it than take it away, for me is just one more feature that when i want it makes it more fun

Not on Strava. And if y'all are Strava-ing Pacifica or Santa Cruz.... please oh please deactivate yerself now!
I killed my account & everything Strava when I 1st read this but I’m too slow for it to have ever mattered anyways & this is the main thing the app screws up GPS numbers & should not be relied upon in a legal matter like this if we had a proper lawyer on our side this would not have happened
