FOX Introduces All-New 34, Float X, and DHX for 2022 21

After launching the 38 and overhauling the enduro range last year, FOX turns its attention to the trail range.

Last year saw the launch of the 38 and continued improvements and refinements brought to the 36, as well as the X2 family of shocks. For 2022, FOX has turned its attention to the trail range of products, with all-new 34, Float X and DHX launching today. We've got the goods inbound for some testing, but global supply chain issues and what not have delayed them a bit - dig into all the details below and stay tuned for our ride impressions to follow later.

LOWER LEG BYPASS CHANNELS

As a fork compresses, the air volume within the lower legs decreases, increasing air pressure. The more the fork compresses, the more pressure increases. This effect can have the unintended consequence of preventing full travel from being achieved. Our lower leg channels help alleviate this issue by dramatically increasing air volume within the lower legs and thereby reducing the amount of additional unintended pressure ramping. Another benefit of these channels is that lower leg bath oil is circulated to the upper reaches of the lower legs, continuously lubricating the foam rings and bushings as the fork compresses and extends through its travel.

LOWER LEG ARCH

Stiffness-to-weight is the ultimate metric for bicycle design. Engineers invest countless hours poring over every ounce of material in an effort to optimize this critical ratio. The all-new 34 pulls out all the stops, shaving every possible gram while making sure not to  compromise the stiffness or strength requirements of modern trail riding. Modern frame designs and geometry trends require modern suspension design solutions. The arch design is designed to pair perfectly with modern trail bikes. Head tube profiles have grown larger and larger, and fork offsets shorter and shorter. Our new arch shape takes this need into account by jutting forward to provide ample headtube clearance at full compression. State-of-the-art computer modeling techniques helped us to create an organic lower leg shape that optimizes stiffness with the absolute minimal amount of material.

FLOAT EVOL

Returning with the same legendary suppleness and longevity, the EVOL air spring in 34’s now has an enlarged negative air spring to assist with mid-stroke support. New for 2022, the 34 SC comes with the option to tune the negative air spring with a volume spacer.

GRIP2 (34 ONLY)

Our GRIP2 damper is the benchmark for unparalleled ride quality and ultra-precise adjustability. GRIP2 includes our patented Variable Valve Control (VVC) technology which allows for external fine-tuning of suspension performance. GRIP2 achieves with the twist of a knob what typically requires the time consuming and complicated task of completely disassembling and reassembling the fork.

Why? The DPX2 is the current trail shock, while the X2 is the bigger brother, built for enduro/downhill applications. This new Float X is exactly that, a scaled-down, lighter version of the DPX2.

Well, feel free to think of it any way you want...

Amusingly enough, the FAQ you read on the MTB-MAG page you linked above was ALSO written by FOX. I guess the only thing they are really sure about is that it is scaled down. Scaled down from what, you can pick the one you like...

Now, if you read the Floax X product page on FOX's website, it also references the DPX2 a couple of times when listing out different aspects of the Float X. This seems entirely logical to me, as the Float X was specifically designed for aggressive trail riding, exactly like the DPX2. Also, having ridden them all, I can tell you that the Float X feels much more like a DPX2 than a Float X2.

It's a different design than both of those and seems like fox mixed up in few places. But I would still say, scaled down version of DPX2 sounds wrong, if they both seem similar then how is it a scaled down version of it. Looking at both of same size shocks, float x is beefier. Fox also orders shocks and forks in light weight to aggressive order and they did put float x in between DPX2 and X2.

As I said in the article, we're currently testing all of these new products. I have the new 34 and the Float X on one of my test bikes right now, and the DHX waiting to be installed.

As for the meaning of the expression "scaled down", it doesn't necessarily point to the "beefiness" or the size of the shock. The Float X is a mono-tube design as opposed to the DPX2 and X2 which are both twin-tube, and the compression lever on the Floats X only offers 2 positions, not 3. So in that sense, yes, it is scaled down.

Gotcha, I didn't realize you were the author, my bad. I am looking forward to the review, as I was thinking about selling DPX2 and getting X or X2. A explanation of design would be very helpful as well, as my assumption for single tube vs twin tube was that later uses second tube differently. Also I assume previous float x had similar design and fox went back to that, most of press release seems marketing to me now (calling it all new), and fox calling it downscaled version of DPX2 was pretty bad step on their side, seems like that's why they changed it or it was an error (they accidentally said DPX2 when they meant X2 as they also said lightweight version, which isn't true for same sizes). If float was replacing DPX2 or not was pretty inconsistent as well, DPX2 was removed from fox website for some time. X2 also offers two position as well, it's pretty muddy to me now.

Is that a Tallboy in the cover photo with coil shock (assuming by colors and also 34 fork)? Does the new DHX fits now (seems they offer it in 190x45)?

Also noting the lack of shocks for non-metric bikes. I guess this is the final death kneel for those older frames as far as high performance shocks go.

Also, stoked on the DHX, I’ve been commenting fox needed a coil version of the DPX and while this isn’t a direct port, its close enough

It’s not a conversion, it’s all the shipping costs,import duties and VAT that adds up. If they converted the prices directly from $ to € we’d pay 200-250€ less.

Shipping costs don't come into it - the parts have to be shipped to the US as well. They're not shipped to the US then back to Europe. Import duties and VAT (if applicable) still don't cover the difference.

I guess I see a lot of options for 140mm 27.5 on several of the manufacturers websites. Just might be near impossible to find one for sale anywhere, even in a normal year.

They must have received no demand from manufacturers for >140mm 650b forks or or the old length shocks, fox have been pretty good at making random product in the past.
Sure who would make something like that for sale anyway.
