This would work well with the Reverse Steerer Clamp for people worried about preloading the headset in the event of a crash/it loosening. And be a cheap way of adding the EDC to a second bike

finally one that will fit my mattoc.

edit: does the plastic carrier work with the multi tool from the original EDC? the listing for the lite seems to imply that, and mentions that extra carriers can be purchased for $15. I have the original EDC, if it works with that tool I'd rather just buy the carrier itself, but can't seem to find it.

update: got a response from oneup. the plastic carrier will work with the multitool from the original EDC, and the plastic carrier is listed under small parts for the EDC. currently out of stock, but they said it should be back in stock next week.

I'm known to bump my stem sometimes with a knee. Would really like to know how easy it would be to accidentally pop out. Can you mount it with the flange pointing toward the front of the bike?

The answer from their site is yes: "TRAIL SIDE HEADSET TIGHTENING

If you need to tighten your headset when you are out riding, use the 4mm Hex on your EDC Tool. Tightening on trail will rotate the tool slot, as the plastic carrier will rotate with your EDC Tool. Extend the 4mm Hex on one side of the Multi Tool. On the other side of the tool extend all of the tools and fold them down so that they are 90 degrees to the tool body to create a handle.

Plastic preload cap hmmm....

hmmmm. I like it, but having a metal sleeve for the insert would be nice to avoid people inevitably over torqueing it and it cracking. But that's just the crusty, mistrusting the ability of end users to know how to make things work properly mechanic part of me talking.

Overall it looks great compared to the older design.

This. I asked them about it via e-mail and specifically asked about the glass content. Apparently it's 35 %. I also made sure to drive home the possible issue of relaxation (I was told it will be looked into), but glass content does help in this regard. Forgot to ask which plastic this is made from (it also has an influence), but still. Will ask around at work if it's a problem, but yeah, it being plastic is still a bit of a concern to me.

truth be told, I'll likely try it out anyways, maybe buying just the top cap at first as I already have an EDC and a pump (two pumps actually and I'll probably buy another EDC to go with it as well). I really like the idea of having a top cap mounted multitool, it really comes in handy for a quick fiddle (with the EDC in the pump being a bit too fiddly to be honest).

EDIT: to be clear, the stem should hold the preload even if the plastic part relaxes a bit and loses tension. The issue is that if your stem moves (rotates in a crash), it will loosen the preload as well. With a normal topcap this is not an issue, but it is also an issue with OneUp's threadless EDC stem, that preloads the bearing through a conical interface. If the stem rotates in that case, it can (and will) move axially and loosen the preload as well.

Can it move axially only in normal use? No idea, if I'm honest, but i'd be happy to know or find out. Might just as well, as I've said, I'm likely to try it out. Even if my fork falls out from the headtube, what could possibly go wrong? Wouldn't be the first time I've smashed my face anyway

Spoke with my coworker, he said regardless of the glass content it would most likely need retightening a few times in the first three months, but it should drop off after that. Nevertheless, it should continue to creep indefinitely, even with the glass content...

Jus trying to figure out if this gives me any reason to ditch my Topeak Alien XS w/ chain tool, locking knife, multiple spoke keys & somewhat unneccesary 8 & 10mm box wrenches. I'd lose a knife, chain tool & spoke wrenches and still have to carry my medical stuff, zip ties, duct tape, lighter, Stans Dart, CO2, contact solution, chapstick, mini-rain emergency poncho.

Dang it...looks like I still have a lot of stuff to carry.

I dont see how you could. I love having my Garmin mounted on my K-Edge so a stem tool will never be in my future. Thankfully there are other ways to carry stuff

Ah yes forgot about that style! (I'm running the one that goes in place of the top cap). Based on the pictures it looks like you could still use that since they are running a spacer underneath the carrier.

The original EDC would work because that top cap would thread into the steerer of your fork (which had to be tapped), and preload the spacer/Garmin mount. The Garmin mount also looks like it would work fine with the EDC Lite as well, because the EDC Lite "carrier" basically works like any other top tap (you could make place for more spacers if you needed them by not sinking the star nut quite as deep).

I don't think the Garmin mount would work with the 2nd generation of the full EDC tool however, as that one requires a special spacer and top cap that all snap together with the stem (instead of tapping the fork's steerer...).

It's not really a second generation, it's an alternative. The threaded option is still available (for any standard stem), the stem just removes the need to cut threads. And yeah, with their stem, mounting a Garmin is not possible, as the stem (the conical part in the bottom of it) creates the preload.
