Lighter Weight Prototype Onyx Racing Hubs 13

Onyx drops some weight off their silent, instant-engagement sprag clutch hubs.

Onyx Racing showed us some new, lighter weight versions of their instant engagement hubs. Onyx is known for creating a silent hub that offers virtually instant engagement through its sprag clutch system that relies on several pins between two steel races that lock instantly as you pedal forward.

...the previous two-clutch system.

These new lighter weight hubs use knowledge gained through the creation of their 150/157mm downhill hubs which the technology trickles down from into these 142mm version (and eventually Boost versions as well). The new hubs eliminate the pinchbolt from the axle caps and have a fair bit of machining on the flanges to help reduce the weight.

Additionally, after years of manufacturing experience with their product and learning exactly what's necessary you'll note that the system now has one and a half sprag clutch mechanisms versus two large sprag clutches previously, which also helps reduce the weight by a considerable amount. These prototype versions are still 6-9 months out but Onyx does plan to offer a retrofit upgrade for those looking to reduce the weight of their current hubs. Onyx oftentimes builds hubs by hand, per order, will customize the color and offers free laser etching of a logo or a name. The target weight of the new hubs is 320 grams, where the 12x142mm hub currently weighs 414 grams. Onyx is also working on a Cam Zink signature edition version of their boost hubs as well as RockShox Torque Cap compatible hubs.
