Eight races for the globe-trotting Enduro World Series in 2018.

The Enduro World Series announces their 2018 calendar which features 8 races that bounce across the globe. There's a nice mix of familiar and new venues. The first two races hit South America with back-to-back weekend events in Chile and Colombia. A six-week break gives everyone a rest before the series lands in Europe for three contests that are spread out from May through July before romping back to Canada for Crankworx Whistler. Back-to-back weekends close out the season back in Europe after another sustained break. We've heard that there were talks with two new U.S.-based venues (East and West coast) that may materialize in 2019.

  2. March 31, April 1 - Manizales, Colombia
  3. May 12, 13 - Olargues - Montagnes du Caroux, France
  4. June 30, July 1 - Petzen-Jamnica, Slovenia/Austria
  5. July 21, 21 - La Thuile, Italy
  6. August 12 - Whistler, Canada
  7. September 22, 23 - Ainsa-Sobrabre, Spain
  8. September 29, 30 - Finale Ligure, Italy

make the grand enduro an EWS stop in the furture! maybe combine with powderhorn and you would have yourself a weekend

it came down to available dates next year. Everyone wanted to avoid a clash with CWX slopestyle and DH weekend. Im sure Aspen will be back at some point. It was sweet this year. Often giving some venues a break means even better racing on more new trails the next visit.

Good to know Sven... However, its kind of sad that between DH and Enduro there isn't a US stop... North America should have 2-3 stops per series. Arguably the best two riders in both disciplines the past couple years are American (maybe less so for richie than gwin). It's a shame that their success isn't being taken advantage of in the US.

Scheduling is a real issue, but there has to be more to this than that and it would be great if someone actually came out told it how it really is. I've heard whispers that most US spots are simply not down with the financial fleecing the UCI does, but I got to think enduro is a bit different.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say too many N American organisers or venues are looking solely for a ROI - there is no passion spirit or risk takers and maybe more importantly little help from host towns and tourist agencies that kick in around the rest of the year. While yes, Aspen could have done another year after their great job it is also good to go to new venues and give venues like Aspen for example to build even more cool tracks like they did this year. Don't solely blame EWS and UCI for not coming to USA but rather the lack of community who are willing to do (like Windham banded together to do) But i do agree it is mind boggling to think there is no stops where a big percentage of the industry has their HQ and you have top riders like Gwin and Rude. Make it happen.

Good points and I really appreciate your thoughts Sven so you are at all of these events.

I came off more on the side of blaming UCI and EWS and there certainly is the organizer side as well. I'm with you that it's kind of mind blowing. There should be plenty of venue opportunities in NA

You're right on the basics Sven, but "blame" is the wrong idea... There is a lack of community in enduro, and in all of mtb racing in general (that's why it is in the state it's in in North America)... in enduro's case we can use the excuse that it is new... It takes time to build a community , but it is happening... There is also a lot of "inside ball" and moving parts when it comes to who gets what races and what is able to be executed or not at the uci and ews levels... It is not as simple as who wants it worse than the others... There are other organizations to do a USA ews, but it's not just a case of raising your hand, and it's not for lack of passion on anyone's part... The rapid rise of enduro in profile hides a lot of gaps in overall organization in the sport... It's not as big as it looks, it's not as sophisticated as it looks, and there is not yet the robust community behind it that you may think. It's supported by relatively few people actually planning and executing things, so some stuff just can't get done like you would think... Anyone who is bummed on no USA stop should not look to the bike industry, they should volunteer in their local racing scene... The problem is lack of community, and lack of humans to execute.

Sven and erik are both right. It takes a tremendous amount of time, effort, organization, love, and MONEY to stage an EWS event. Most promoters or--even more so--most venues are solely focused on the bottom line as defined by "How much profit can we make off of this event?" The answer, absent something like Crankwork for EWS Whistler, stops the decision making process in its tracks. And it's critically important to keep in mind that Crankworx has all the organization, time, money, love, and whatnot--but it has taken how many years of grinding work and success to get to where it is today?

But hell, what do I know? I'm just an attorney who builds and remodels houses for a living...
