GLEN - ALL TIME FAVORITE
The GLEN is a bike for a wide range of use and every purpose. With 150 - 160 mm travel at the front and 150 mm at the rear, it is perfect for demanding trails. Based on our proven kinematics, the frame has been completely redeveloped. With almost the same weight, we were able to further improve the strength. The cross-sections of the tubes and wall thicknesses as well as all milled parts have been optimized and the leverage ratio further refined. The new GLEN pushes straight forward and is plusher on the trail without losing the excellent mid-travel-support.
GEOMETRY LAST GLEN
When optimizing the geometry, it was important to us to keep the playful character of the GLEN. The chainstays are therefore still on the short side in relation to the frame size and the increased reach. The GLEN is significantly more agile than the COAL and can be set up as a 29er or MX in all frame sizes.
COAL - PROGRESSIVE ENDURO BIKE
The COAL excels at the descend. The suspension is sensitive at the beginning and generates a lot of grip. The middle section is relatively linear. The system therefore remains high in its travel and provides an active ride. This is also the reason why air and coil shocks work equally well. The progression only increases significantly towards the end of the travel and creates a great bottom-out protection.
GEOMETRY LAST COAL
The geometry of the COAL is clearly designed for demanding enduro riding. The modern reach-to-stack ratio ensures best riding position on the bike. The 63 degree head angle generates a lot of confidence in rough sections and keeps the speed high. The chainstay length increases in size 195 up to 447 mm and ensures very good integration into the bike. For sizes 165 and 175 the chainstays are so short that the lively MX-setup is mandatory.
FUNCTIONAL FRAME DESIGN
The design of the new frame generation is straightforward and clean. Not every shape can be realized light and durable at the same time. Primarily the concept needs to work on the trail. The focus is therefore always on performance, meaning the combination of functionality and light weight. Form follows – the seat stays and the top tube run elegantly in a diagonal. The top tube sits lower on the now entirely completely straight seat tube. This saves weight, increases stiffness and the standover height is lower across all frame sizes. Insertion depth is plenty while seat tubes are short.
The head tube length increases significantly for the larger sizes, so that unnecessary spacer towers can be dispensed with. The dropouts are milled hollow from the inside. This avoids mud pockets and the transition to the seat stays is form-fitting.
HYBRID MANUFACTURING
Our frames are welded, aligned and heat-treated in Taiwan, while final machining of the threads, contact surfaces and bearing seats is completed in Germany using 5-axis-mills. We check the individual parts before assembly and press in the bearings. This way we can control the quality, proper assembly and perfect function of each frame. The division of labour between Taiwan and our local manufactory enables us to offer elaborate frames
in top quality at the best possible price.
GEOMETRY OPTIMIZATION OF THE FRAME SIZES
Typical LAST, the geometry of COAL and GLEN is elaborately optimized for the specific frame size. The chainstay length, seat angle and head tube length grow with. This ensures a good balance between front and rear wheel. Together with steeper effective seat angles the pedalling efficiency on demanding climbs is noticeably improved. We always specify the effective seat angle in relation to the assumed seat and rider height. In addition to
the seat angles, the reach and stack also increase significantly. Especially in sizes 185 and 195 the modifications ensure a better riding position. The seat tubes are now completely straight and shorter. This avoids compromises in the seat post insertion depth and creates freedom of movement. Depending on the riding style, it is possible to choose a smaller or larger frame. We name the frame sizes according to the assumed rider height
to provide an easy starting point for choosing the right size.
PROGRESSIVE SUSPENSION SYSTEM
We have been successfully implementing progressive suspension systems for over 20 years. The variation of link and rocker makes it possible to adjust the leverage ratio and suspension travel for the intended purpose. This results in two optimized kinematics for COAL and GLEN. Modern shocks offer more adjustment options that can be used for personal customization. This has enabled us to slightly reduce the progression. The use
of the suspension travel is optimized without releasing too much travel in the middle of the stroke. The progressive characteristic leverage ratio is well suited to coil and air shocks. We calculate the progression from the SAG point, as we consider this value to be more meaningful.
ANTI-SQUAT
In order to generate the best possible pedalling efficiency for every frame size, the kinematics have been optimized so that the differences between the anti-squat curves are minimal. In addition to the improved riding position, the slightly increased anti-squat value ensures greater pedalling efficiency. In blue the graphs show the anti-squat value of the four frame sizes depending on the gear engaged. Shaded in gray are the curves that
would have resulted without size-specific correction. This complex design is particularly advantageous for short and tall riders, as they would otherwise be far from the optimum due to their low respective high center of gravity.
ANTI-RISE
The anti-rise value determines how the suspension behaves when braking. Values below 100 % tend to cause the rear triangle to extend under braking. Above 100 %, the rear compresses and the suspension behaves firmer. The size-specific optimization of the position of the pivot points
results in practically congruent graphs, shown in blue, for all four frame sizes.
TOTAL BEARING QUALITY
The final machining of the bearing seats, all contact surfaces incl. postmount and threads is done in Germany on a high-precision 5-axis milling machine in one setup. We summarize this process under the term "Total Bearing Quality”. The aim is to achieve a high-quality and, above all, durable bearings. In addition to the bearings as such, this includes the bearing seats, the alignment of the bearing seats to each other and the mounting and protection against dirt. Stainless steel full complement bearings allow for better load carrying capacity and increase the radial stiffness while increasing corrosion protection. Bearings are from Endurobearings. The machining of all bearing seats on the frame with a high-precision
5-axis milling machine in Germany allows for the most precise diameter, shape and position tolerances, so that components are not stressed during assembly and operation. For the entire frame, we use a standardized bearing size of 28 x 15 x 7 mm, which is widely available worldwide.
MX-OPTION
For the MX-Options, COAL and GLEN use a 27.5 inch rear wheel and thus combine the advantages of a 29 inch and 27.5 inch in one bike. The large front wheel has good rollover characteristics and the smaller rear wheel offers more freedom of movement and greater stiffness. In the MX-Options, we use a different link for COAL and GLEN. The links compensate for the smaller wheel diameter. The geometry and kinematics remain almost unchanged.
DOWNTUBE PROTECTION
The downtube protection is laminated in our manufactory. We glue the protection in place with a shock-absorbing foam film - the frame is not weakened by unnecessary bolting points.
CHAINSTAY PROTECTION
The chainstay is protected with very soft flaps. The protection encloses the chainstay and annoying chain slap noise is effectively avoided. The right seatstay is protected on the inside.
TOOL MOUNT
The practical mount under the toptube carries tools, pump and a spare tube. The hole spacing corresponds to the bottle cage dimensions and is compatible with common systems.
CABLE INSERTS
The cable inserts on the front triangle are now the same size on both sides. The front brake can be mounted moto style and all cables are organized cleanly. There are three different inserts to cover all possible cable routings - completely closed, with one or with two holes.
CABLE-MANAGEMENT
The central cable management is positioned close to the pivot point so that the cables are not moving when the suspension compresses - the shifting performance remains high. In the front, all cables are covered by anti rattle tubes. Access to cable management is large for easy installation. The NBR molded part seals everything perfectly and keeps water out.
BRAKE HOSE ROUTING
The brake hose runs externally on the swingarm. This makes installation easy and all standard steel flex hoses can be installed. On the front the brake hose is routed internally and is covered by an anti rattle tube.
UDH & T-TYPE COMPATIBLE
We use derailleur hangers in the UDH standard by SRAM on all LAST frames. The derailleur hanger is available worldwide and can be easily replaced. The rear triangle of GLEN and COAL is compatible with SRAM T-Type drivetrains.
BSA BOTTOM BRACKET AND ISCG ADAPTER
BSA bottom brackets are easy to service and can be found on all LAST frames. If required, chain guide and crash plate can be mounted using the optional ISCG 05 adapter.
SEALED LOCKRINGS
The C-lock rings of the bearings have an integrated sealing function. For this purpose, they are overmolded with rubber. If necessary, they can be replaced by standard parts available worldwide.
MOUNTING HARDWARE
The additional washers required for the trunnion mount are captively pressed into the rocker. The lower mounting hardware is made of titanium and PVD coated.
UNIFORM BEARING AND BOLT SIZE
M15 bolts of the same type are used uniformly on the front- and rear triangle as well as on rocker and link. The same applies to the bearing size: we use standardized double-sealed, full complement, stainless steel bearings in the dimension 28 x 15 x 7 mm. Due to the trunnion mount standard, we have to use M10 bolts on the upper shock mount.
COLOR OPTIONS
GLEN and COAL are available in raw, black anodized and dark blue powder-coated. The raw version is just brushed. The decals are bonded. Thanks to our cooperation with 70ID, we can also realize individual color designs on request.
SPARE PARTS
Durable and full serviceable bikes are key goals for our team. Of course, we have all spare parts in stock so that the frame can be used for a long period. All spare parts can be collected from us locally or ordered directly via our webshop.
WARRANTY AND CRASH REPLACEMENT
GLEN and COAL frames are warranted against defects in materials and workmanship for 6 years. If the frame is damaged due to a crash, our crash replacement program will take effect. Since we do stock the individual parts of the frame, it is rarely necessary to replace the entire frame. The crash replacement is valid within the first three years from purchase and includes a 50 % discount on the respective frame components.
RESPONSIBILITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Good conditions with regard to environmental protection and occupational safety are particularly important to us - whether on site in Dortmund or with our partners and suppliers. That’s why we attach great importance to ensuring that our suppliers come from free democratic countries. We rely on sustainable energy from Naturstrom and wherever possible we try to reuse packaging material. We use a bicycle with a trailer for inner-city transportation. The frames are milled locally in NRW, Germany and custom color requests are realized in Hagen - the neighboring city of Dortmund.
EFBE
Function and safety are fundamental requirements for us. That‘s why, in addition to practical testing, we rely on extensive lab testing. For more than two decades, we have been working with EFBE Prüftechnik GmbH in Waltrop, just north of Dortmund. We approve COAL and GLEN frames for use in category 5 according to ASTM F-2043-13. To be able to use the entire bike in this category, suitable components must be installed. The frame can be used for enduro racing.
BIKE HANDOVER AND FIRSTRIDE
