Gee Atherton's Horrible Crash at Mont Sainte Anne 2012 27

Gee Atherton gets nose-heavy off a step down during the DH practice at the Mont Sainte Anne World Cup. Last year the radar guns clocked Gee at 53kph through this section. Gee is doing ok and is talking of riding in practice tomorrow. We're all glad you're ok!

with most of the heavy hitters out of the way, Gee is 6th in qualifying right now. TOUGH AS NAILS!

Jeebus! That was brutally savage.

I would think it was more user-related in regards to the cause of the crash. He did mention it was his first attempt at a full run AND he is still technically recovering from a broken leg.

Whatever the case, it's good to know he walked away from that one and can ride another day!

Gee has always been pushing at the very limit, and has taken a bunch of big crashes over the years. At the speeds these guys are now going (especially since Gwin upped the level for everybody AGAIN), all it takes is for you to be a little bit off your timing on a jump like this, and you'll get bucked.

Years on predictable, simple, single pivots and hardly a crash and now he's on that thing where your mass is hanging off the swingarm (god knows how much unsprung mass and rotational friction that ads) and he's nearly died three times. Watch some vids of his recent runs in comparison to other riders like Hill and Gwinn and you can see him getting pitched forward when he hits square edge and ruts fast.

Gee had many OTB type crashes over the years on every bike he has ridden. He rode most of last year with concussion from multiple crashed on commencal. He is faster on the GT his splits have proved it, just had a bit of bad luck in Ft Bill and RSA otherwise those podiums could have just as easy been wins.

so funny the speculation that its equipment related. If you are not pushing it like these guys in practice (& Race and Quali) you are not going to be on the podium. Lots of the top riders had big crashes today. Combination of track speed and conditions and just manning up. These guys are in the gym 75 % of the time just to prevent injuries such as this. 99 % of us normal riders wouldn't be able to even walk for week or we would be broken after a crash like this.

This is what seperates the pro athletes from the rest of us. HARDCORE. And to think he also broke his leg, what, just 3 months ago?

If that happened to me (not that I'd ever have the balls to go that fast), I'd be taking the trip home in a wooden box.

wow, that's just awful. Everyone knows Gee is an incredible rider, I personally doubt it's the equipment, at that level. Maybe just bad luck? Hopefully he's mentally and physically ready to ride %100 on Sunday, but I'm not sure how that would be really possible after that.

Gee seems like too good of a rider to suffer two large OTB jump crashes in such a short span. I don't claim to know the reason, and maybe its just fluke, but you can't blame anyone for questioning the equipment. especially the rear shock. Or maybe the new pro trick is to run zero rear rebound damping?

second crash "nose-heavy"... full carbon frame (pretty light) and a fox 40 on the front... would it be the cause???
