Lars Sternberg is helping Shimano test various versions of their yet to be officially released 1X chainring. He's been practicing the Whistler EWS on this ring for three days without a chainguide and hasn't dropped a chain yet. He also chose to race without a guide.

I don't understand why he is on last years xtr? When the new stuff first came out Lars was one of the first to be on it

Pretty confident for race day... I have never had 100% chain retention with SRAM or Shimano setups using clutch derailleurs with the "correct" 1x chainrings. Granted, I've only lost the chain maybe once or twice without a top guide, but that's too many times. Martin Maes might agree. It probably depends quite a bit on suspension design?

Are they testing a 1x drivetrain or a chainring? Anyone who's run a narrow-wide with a clutch derailleur knows the chain stays on like glue.

I'm a massive hack and didn't lose a chain with my guideless 1X setup on these trails and in the park. Stayed on as my bike tumbled down microclimate. I'm sold on chain security.
