I've tried pretty hard, and can't seem to drop the chain without a guide. Silent, too.

Talking VERY well. Zero dropped chains for me so far. Keene said he's dropped one in 4 months. Also followed a chap down porcupine with no guide and no problems. I believe it.

Noise is nonexistent as well, and by removing the guide you really do lose a lot of friction. A taco style bash guard might be a good investment though.
