Because this is technically a "Freeride" bike (hence the FR label), Trek spec'd the bike with a long-range cassette. I don't think many people would want to pedal this bike up hills, but the gear range was big enough to get most jobs done. Penalty is weight and 3 or 4 unused gears for most people, however.
