The downtube guard concept came from Trek's carbon frame development. Years of Trek R&D showed that any dangerous impact from debris occurred in this area and they applied the guard to their carbon frames, like the Remedy. Now it's passed on to the bigger hit gravity bikes like the Session and Scratch.
