I had always shot the Canyon Gap Jump from the other side, and from much higher up. On the Saturday of this past Rampage, I decided to try a couple of shots from this side, right by the take-off ramp. Then, with one rider left to hit it, I decided to climb down to the bottom of the canyon. When I got roughly into position, I looked up, and realized that I would be shooting directly into the sun. I decided to try to line the rider up with the sun for a silhouette, but knew that shooting single frame, my timing would be critical. I hoped that I was properly aligned with the rider's trajectory. Kelly came down the mountain and hit the jump, and I snapped the shutter. Then I looked at the LCD display screen and saw that I had missed him altogether. I started to wonder how I could have missed him by that much. I thought, "I may not have gotten him when he was in front of the sun, but he should at least be somewhere in the frame..." Then I decided to zoom in, and that's when I realized that I had totally nailed the shot!
