i have a sedan, not hatchback (those are gross : ) snow is fine if you're not trying to monster truck. i survived winter in colorado without a glitch. i wasn't going into the mtns much in the snow, but i definitely drove around town in 6 inches of snow. with more than 2 people, it gets bogged down for sure. the back seats are pretty worthless for people as the roof is too low. but with the car full of gear and a passenger, i'm rarely in less than 4th gear on freeway mtn climbs (like vail pass or eisenhower tunnel). i have a standard transmission. it gets the job done if you roll solo for sure. trips from cali to colorado and back going 75/80mph, i was always right around 40mpg. drive more conservatively and you can get more. with a big tailwind in wyoming once i got 50+mpg, LOL.

A buddy of mine treated one of these rental yaris's like a dune buggy in puerto rico. have you driven it in snow yet? how about with several passengers in the mountains, can it climb? i need a new car is why i am asking...
