This was so hard to watch in many ways, but so so good in others. Thank you Rob for sharing your story - the real one - not what we see on Camera. You wear your heart on your sleeve when it comes to DH, and having that taken away truly devastated you. Thank you so much for being open, raw, honest and vulnerable.

This will hopefully live long as one of the best pieces of journalism our sport has ever produced, right up there with Mike Ferrentino and Steve Jones’ best. Olly and Davi were incredibly well prepared, and so gentle, engaging, and patient, all at the same time. They should be proud of their side of the work here.

 

But obviously Rob’s candor and vulnerability was the biggest takeaway. Hundreds of thousands of words and opinions have already been shared about what we all lost when WB/D took over the broadcasting of World Cup mountain biking, and Rob is top of that list, no contest. And I honestly fired this podcast up excited for juicy and provocative details about ‘what really went down’. That was the least important thing discussed, and when I closed the tab afterwards, it was the last thing on my mind. His struggle and inner turmoil are clearly very real, and so many others, men especially , suppress that and try to conceal it (something Davi and Rob discuss briefly). The difference is Rob chose a very public place to talk about it and share his very personal experiences and feelings in order to find some closure and move on. In doing so he may inspire others (hopefully men) to do the same. That needs to be loudly applauded. I’m just so glad he isn’t in that awful place and state of mind anymore; the world is a far more interesting place with him and his voice in it! And I can’t wait to see that movie, parts one AND two.

 

My 12 year old child, who has been watching the DH WC with me since they were 4, is also on the spectrum, and has ADHD. They struggle in different ways from Rob, but the two of them share a lot in common also. I really want them to watch this, and then talk with them about it after. I think they might learn something about themselves, and if I’m lucky, I’ll learn something about them too.
