The weight penalty ain't such a bad thing when you consider it's not sprung or rotating weight positioned low in the middle of the bike, the reliability factor of no r/d and chain swapping around on a cassette is pretty awesome too, i think people would be surprised if they rode a bike like this how well it would work.

The idea of a gearbox is novel, but the reliability and light-weight nature of our current external systems doesn't justify the cost or weight penalties of using a gearbox...yet.
