Call him Mr. Leogang! The weekend could not have finished in a better way for YT Mob rider Aaron Gwin. Excellent track and weather conditions, the best time in qualifying, and finally a well-deserved victory after an insanely fast run.
The race weekend in Leogang ran like clockwork for Aaron Gwin. The 2.63km long track – which is one of Aaron’s favorites – presented itself in dry and dusty conditions. He won the Qualifying on Saturday smoothly by a margin of 2 sec to rival Greg Minnaar.
With a proper confidence boost he was the last rider to start on Sunday. You could feel the tension amongst the crowd when Aaron was on track as Loris Vergier had set a very good time in his run and seemed difficult to beat. But Aaron just did what he does best: full throttle, high concentration and pushing like crazy on the super fast Leogang track. When he suddenly made a little mistake in the lower part, a strong murmur went through the crowds as even the tiniest mistake could have cost him the win. But he mastered the dusty and loose track confidently and with 3:06.958 he took the win in Leogang – the third year in a row!
Aaron on his run: “What a weekend! Enjoyed every day of my time here in Leogang this week. Felt great on the track from my first run on Friday and I was really excited for race day. So happy to throw down a solid run and get a win. I’m feelin’ faster and stronger every week right now, stoked for the rest of the season!" With his victory Aaron moves up to 2nd position in overall timing.
Unfortunately, Aaron's teammate Neko Mulally was not that lucky: he injured his wrist in a hard crash in training on Friday, therefore completing the qualifying and the race under considerable pain. But he brought down a solid run and set himself in position 35 with a total time of 3:17.844, now ranked in 11th in the overall ranking. Neko said: “Super happy for Aaron this weekend! It’s awesome to see your friends achieve their goals. My weekend was a challenge as I rode with a sore wrist and had limited practice, but all in all I’m happy to leave Leogang in a position to race at my best in Andorra. I’ve had a lot of good things happening to me lately and this small set back is just a minor bump in the road.”
The team takes a two-week break now before they head over to Vallnord at the end of July.
