Park Tool Chain Checker CC-2

I was in the market for an easy-to-use chain checker after switching to the Sram XO1 11 speed drive train. Not replacing a $35 chain could wear out my hyper-expensive cassette so I wanted to get the most accurate one. After a bit of research, I decided to go with the Park Tool CC-1 chain checker. After 2 years of use, these are my impressions

Simple and easy to use

The thing I like most about this chain checker is how straight-forward it is to use.

Place the chain checking between the links of a chain, slightly press the black swivel until it begins to stop. Look through the measurement hole and see what it reads. If past .75, replace the chain. Pretty simple right? One thing to keep in mind is that the Park Tool recommends replacing 9 and 10 speed chains at the .75 reading. For a 11 speed chain, they recommend replacing it at .50. This is extremely valuable information if your cassette costs more than a top-of-the-line department store bike.

Issues and concerns

The chain checker functionality is centered completely on the two measurement pins on the back of the checker. Although made of high quality alloys, it is still proned to bending or breaking. If this happens, this will give you an inaccurate reading which could be very costly. If you plan on adding this tool to your collection, make an added effort to place in a safe place so the pins won’t get bent.

Bottom line

I love using the Park Tool CC-1 chain checker. It’s worked well for me. Keep in mind that 9-10 speed and 11 speed chains have different wear recommendations. Also make sure the pins are safe from being bent. If you are okay keeping both of these things in mind, you would be very happy with this tool! P.S. It’s also currently on-sale on Jensonusa.
