Tread Pattern
Time on the tire has been short but here's some initial thoughts as a rear only tire.
Tread Pattern - Shed light mud well. Braking is good on hardpack and loose terrain. Tire corners well for a rear tire with the large side lugs. This tire rolls really well.
Compound - For an average rider, the maxxx terra compound is fine for the rear. High level racer would probably appreciate maxxx grip for some added grip when braking in steeps.
This is pretty light tire for a double down casing. about 100 grams lighter than the dhf i was on before (2.3)
Rode some loose, steep off chamber terrain. the large side lugs really help this tire hold lines.
For someone looking for light rolling resistance but some better "all weather" performance, i recommend this over a minion SS, griffin, dhr2. The large spacings between the treads really allow for some mud to clear.
Assumption - If it get's proper muddy, larger knobs will more than likely be a must, but can confirm after this weekend. (dhr2, shorty etc)
Long Term Update
- This tire is even decent in thick (east coast loam) mud. it sheds extremely well. A clean tire with smaller knobs will hook up better than a pack tire with tall knobs. All of my initial short term thought remain true. Rode this tire in the WV winter, so lots of mud. This is a great tire anytime of the year as a rear tire. If you ride lots of steep techy chutes then i would go with something with a bit more bite.
Tire is wearing well. Lots of road/fire road climbs and all dirt descending. Not chunking off badly, center knobs holding up better than expected.
