Maxima Waterproof Grease

Bicycle grease, it’s what every home mechanic needs on their work bench. With so many companies making such a variety of grease related products, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Do you go for the cheapest option or most expensive? I decided to go with a relatively inexpensive grease, Maxima Waterproof Grease, a while back and with plenty of use from it, here are my impressions:

Out of The Box:

The Maxima Waterproof Grease is just as blue as the majority of the label it comes with. This rich color makes it easy to spot where grease is and isn’t when packing hubs, headsets, and bearing.

In addition to the color, the viscosity of the grease is thick enough to coat lower-torqued bolts like those found around the cockpit and linkage of a bike yet thin enough to be packed into smaller bearings and not hinder the rolling efficiency.

I placed the grease around the threads of both of these bolts and only torqued one into the stem, after removing I was able to still see thin layer of grease around the initial threads which is exactly what you want from a good grease. (I apologize that the photo doesn’t show this very well.)

Long-Term Durability:

After 2 months of packing my bearings with this grease I opened them back up and was glad to see that the majority of the grease was still there, doing it’s job. What more could you ask for from a basic grease? Although I haven’t had time to put more time between service intervals, I will be happy to update this review with what I observe another 4-6 months down the road.

Bottom Line:

Grease is super important to keep your bike running well.From bolts to headsets, to linkage bearings. Any of these dry out and you’re going to have a bad time. Coming in under $10 for a 16 oz jug, you really can’t beat the value of the Maxima Waterproof Grease. It retains well while keeping rolling resistance down in bearings and offers great lubrication between lower-torqued bolts. The blue dye makes seeing where you are applying the grease very helpful. If you are in the market for some effective yet inexpensive grease, pick up a container of this stuff. You will not be disappointed.
