This is one in a long line of Shimano's classic minimalist SPD pedals and a similar design as the M520, M540, and M980. Although it is a discontinued XT model (replaced by the M8000 series), you can still find this pedal among old stock or it can be picked up for a song in used condition online or from a riding buddy.
The bearings will spin smoothly for over a decade for most users and they are nearly indestructible. There is no platform for support when you are unclipped, but this also means there is less pedal body to strike rocks. Seals are very good and keep the dirt and water out. They are reasonable weight and the solid design can outlast most bikes, but they do require some routine observation and periodic checks to avoid problems.
The pedal and bearings are held together by a threaded collar on the inboard side of the body. I have experienced this collar becoming loose over time which can result in a clicking sound as you pedal. Further inspection will reveal some side-to-side play. It is easily remedied by re-tightening the collar to the correct torque. Check this periodically between rides.
The pedals tighten to the crank using an 8mm allen wrench on the inside of the shaft. When you install any pedal, the threads should be coated with a small amount of grease before tightening them down. Failure to use grease can result in the steel pedal shaft and aluminum crankset to become galled together over time. This problem isn't specific to Shimano, but you can't put a regular pedal wrench on this to break it loose. Wrenching on a seized pedal with the allen wrench can lead to stripping or even breaking the keyway. Avoid this situation by using a little grease as you install any pedal.
