Function
The Candy 1 pedal is a great choice for learning how to ride clipless. Installation is simple and easy. The spring is very easy to get your shoe in and out of. The platform has enough support to give confidence on xc trails, but I wouldn't suggest it for all mountain riding. I have ridden a few downhill courses on the Candy, and I wanted more platform. If you are looking for a larger platform, check out the Crankbrothers Mallet E.
Durability
These have lasted for 5 years of mountain biking and commuting in all kinds of conditions. They have absorbed abuse from a few crashes and multiple pedal strikes. The platform has scratched but not cracked or failed in any other way. I have never serviced the pedals and they still have a good turn over.
