USA BMX and BMX Canada have launched five (5) new classes for mountain bikes that will be available all summer through Aug. 31 at all sanctioned BMX tracks across the United States and Canada. The five classes include an all-inclusive mountain bike Dirt Jumper class and four (4) age-category classes for traditional mountain bikers.

“We kept hearing from our members and others in the community about the need for a series just for mountain biking,” said Shane Fernandez, president of USA BMX. “With tens of millions of mountain bikers in the United States alone of all skill levels, we are excited to bring this special series to life and create a space for them to do what they love alongside riders just like them.”

For mountain bike races, riders will race from the starting gate with the cadence and gate drop. The race will be a start-to-finish on the track with no laps. Bikes of all wheel sizes are allowed, but they must have a suspension front fork. The Dirt Jumper “DJ” class is limited to hardtail bikes with a wheel size of fewer than 27.5 inches.

Riders will accrue points and be ranked toward their assigned district at each race they participate in through the end of the series on Aug. 31. Following the series, the winner in each district for both the Dirt Jumper and age-specific mountain bike categories will receive a special award.

All riders must obtain a USA BMX membership prior to participating in the series, Fernandez said.

About USA BMX: Established as the American Bicycle Association in 1977 and headquartered in Tulsa, Oklahoma, ABA is the nation’s largest cycling organization with more than 70,000 members with combined racing and freestyle events at more than 300 sanctioned BMX tracks across North America and Canada. ABA empowers and elevates the early stages of bicycle development by creating opportunities through facility development, programs, and national events. As a result, ABA has developed a structured blueprint. A cyclist can progress from humble beginnings on a balance bike to becoming a BMX Olympian by establishing these roots.

Through STEAM, scholarships, freestyle amateur events, the national series, the Olympics, and new facilities built across the U.S., these four pillars under the USA BMX organization will impact young riders and families: USA BMX Foundation, USA BMX Freestyle, USA BMX Racing, and ABA Ethos.
