When a bike accelerates, the bike will squat backward due to the pressure applied by the rider's foot on the pedal. This causes the rear shock absorber to compress, and the force of this compression comes from the force applied by the foot on the pedal. Therefore, there is a concept of pedal efficiency, and typically, the less the rear shock absorber compresses during acceleration, the higher the efficiency of the bike.
For non-high-pivot desgin bikes, the pedal efficiency can be improved by "interfering" with the compression of the rear suspension through the force applied on the pedal. This can be understood as using a partial amount of force applied on the pedal during acceleration to stretch the rear shock absorber in order to reduce the amount of compression. Although this improves the pedal efficiency, it also causes the rear suspension to become less responsive, leading to a decrease in its ability to absorb shocks during acceleration.
