IRVINE, Calif. – Shimano is proud to announce its involvement with the 20th Annual Southridge USA Challenge Super D event at Fontana, CA. November 19, 2011.
Interest in Super D is growing rapidly with many traditional downhill and cross country racers beginning to add Super D to their race schedules. Joe Lawwill, MTB Marketing Specialist for Shimano has worked with Fontana to craft up new Super D courses to appeal to the masses. A brand new second course has been added to the popular long course and now for the first time at Fontana, riders will be running a two course, combined time format. From top pros to 1st time racers, the Super D events out at Fontana cater to all abilities and backgrounds.
The commitment from Shimano is on par with the company’s belief and support through new product introductions geared towards this style of mountain bike riding and competition. Cross country racers not accustomed to the extra rigors of Super D racing will find great confidence in Shimano’s latest innovations including Shimano ICE Technology, its newest hydraulic disc brake system and the new RD-M985 Shadow Plus rear derailleur.
Shadow Plus technology provides a selectable pivot for the pulley cage that will increase pivot friction to counteract the forces of up and down chain momentum, or “chain slap,” in rough terrain. Having a quiet ride lets the rider focus on the trail instead of chain noise and in most cases a chain guide is not necessary when a Shadow Plus rear derailleur is used.

Super D is a great test for the all-around cyclist. Courses range from 3 minutes to 30 minutes depending on the location and are mainly a gravity fed event. In general the bike of choice is a 4-6.5” trail bike. Super D fills the gap between the extremes of Cross-Country racing and Downhill racing. Super D is for everyone.
