Wide rims are nothing new to trail, enduro, and downhill riders. At this point, the benefits are well understood. By running wide rims with a matching Wide Trail tire, riders can run lower tire pressures, which improves traction and comfort while decreasing rolling resistance.
Now that the trend toward wider rims has reached cross country bikes, Maxxis is offering new Wide Trail (WT) specs of the Aspen and Rekon Race. Developed with input from Nino Schurter, Kate Courtney, and the rest of the SCOTT-SRAM MTB Racing Team, Maxxis’ WT XC tires are optimized for use with 30mm internal width rims.
"For me, the biggest two factors in a tire are performance and durability.
The WT XC tires are the best combination of both." – Kate Courtney
Maxxis Wide Trail XC tires are optimized for use with 30mm internal width rims. A Maxxis WT XC tire mounted to a 30mm wide rim will measure 2.40-inches wide when inflated to 25 PSI. The WT XC tires will perform well on rims as narrow as 25mm, but Maxxis does not recommend rims narrower than 25mm or wider than 30mm. Maxxis recommends a minimum of 6mm clearance between all parts of the bicycle (frame and fork) and the tire.
Not all XC race bikes will have ample tire clearance. Check with your bicycle manufacturer for specific measurements. The bikes below have been tested and proven to fit our Wide Trail XC tires:
