UCI Amends World Cup DHI Rules, Reducing Semi-Final Points

Less points for semi-finals, changes to protected riders provisions, and removing the obligation to provide a timed training session.

The UCI has just published a list of amendments to its rulebook, announcing several key changes to the DHI World Cup:

  • The points awarded in the semi-final have been dramatically reduced, which places greater emphasis on the results of the final (although 100 points for a semi-final win is still nothing to scoff at - we expect to see plenty of fireworks in this round as riders battling for the overall will still have to treat it like a race within the race).
  • The minimum program requirements have been reduced, seemingly removing the obligation to provide a timed training run as was traditionally always the case. As it now stands, the organizer is only obligated to provide one training session before qualifying kicks off (and another one for those qualified for finals day). It will be interesting to see if this is indeed what will happen, and if so, how that will affect certain riders.
  • Current standings top 5 women and top 10 men are now protected for the finals (this appears to have been an omission from the original rules).
