I've been riding mt5 on my dh bike for years and the lever feel was just sad (heard the same from other people), recently rear lever leaked and I've finally converted to shiguras and its suddenly freaking amazing brake, would reccomend. But there are now many fantastic brake options that do not break the bank, beside already mentioned TRP, Hayes Dominion is also amazing, some 5 friends from my rather large riding group moved to Hayes and all of their brakes have been flawless, amazing feel on the lever and great power.

zee/saint with MT5 calipers works fantastic.. some say it works better with non-servo levers (low tier deore and some XTRs) but I dont find anny issue with this setup, for years.. I use magura hose & pin, shimano olive and magura oil...the rpoblem with MT5 levers for me is plastic fantastic that breaks.. and ergonomics.. I hate them.

I have mt5s on my Ron and they’re a huge upgrade over the stock brakes. The levers are more prone to breaking since they’re “carbotecture” which is just plastic. Hasn’t been an issue dumping the bike though since I run full wrap around bark busters.
