Since the tech rumor forum appears to be hallowed ground (and appropriately so), here’s a place for the pedal-assist enthusiasts out there to share ideas and ask questions.
If you’re not into e-bikes, your virgin eyes need not be sullied by this dark corner of the internet.
So the question that prompted this forum page: has anyone ridden the new Bosch SX motor?
Figured I would pose this question again—anyone have experience with the new Bosch SX motor?
Those who have ridden the CX, how customizable are the power settings using the Bosch app?
Is the new SX motor the so-called ”racing motor” that has appeared on various limited edition bike, such as the Mondraker Crafty Carbon XR Unlimited? If not, what are the differences between them?
Mx
No,
most bikes have the CX motor (85Nm), probably the most popular motor at the moment.
Some high end bikes have the CX Race motor, slight internal changes, but mostly software changes to allow more assistance and overrun.
The SX motor is their highly anticipated "light" motor with only 60Nm of power, I don't think there are many, if any, bikes already on sale with them.
I just did an e-bike enduro race, a lot of the top guys have the race motor (and paid through the nose for it, if not sponsored), one guy was telling me he was able to shave off 1 minute from his best time up a technical 15minute climb. On the impossible climb stage, the top results were a SRAM powertrain and Bosch CX race, with a bunch of specialized not too far behind.
Nice! This is what I was looking for! The reviews of the SX motor I’ve seen claim that it has remarkable power for having only 55 or 60 nM of torque, but that at high pedaling cadences it feels comparable to a full powered motor. I’m super curious and intrigued about this motor—the upcoming Norco looks like a great balance of most emtb attributes.
Hm! Interesting. Any DynaMe motor around?
I have one. It’s way more powerful than the Shimano motors my friends have. I make it up steep climbs with ease while they’re working hard.

Specialized launches Kenevo SL 2 with 33% more power thanks to 320W SL 1.2 motor
Same here. I totally love the bike as an overall too.
I'm sure that is one of the best descending bikes out there, but my 70Nm ebike would go through a 500Wh battery in one hour in turbo mode in winter (cold and sluggish terrain). So a 50Nm motor with a 320Wh battery is going to be empty in no time at all!
just had my first cold(ish) ride of the season yesterday...two standard 630Wh Shimano batteries...it was like they only had 4 bars. Definitely more pronounced cold-weather drop than I remember with my first eeb (Norco non-shimano).
It was 43°F
I have both the Bosch cx in a crafty XR and the Brose in a Levo. the Bosch does feel more powerful in emtb mode than Brose does in turbo out of the box. But you can tune the Levo to be very close via the app.
Subscribing! Glad to see some eeb enthusiasts on Vital!
I have yet to actually see one of these new Bosch SX motors in the flesh, but what gives it an edge compared to other mid-power/lightweight motors is the 600W of peak power it can produce. That's nearly double the average for these types of motors which sits at around 350W.
What's more impressive is that number is equal to peak power of the CX & CX race motor (600W), as well as the EP801 from Shimano. Sram sits at 680W (claimed), and the Dyname 4.0 from Rocky Mountain is advertised at 700W.
peak power but not continuous power. know the difference, more like fazuas boost mode, only accessible for a short time frame and without a dedicated button to access it. you need to work for it with high cadence pedaling.
all about the motor, its power etc. tested in the usual german way:

For those who don’t speak German, here’s a written version of the SX motor review:

If you set your location to Canada, you can see the unreleased 2024 Norco Fluid VLTs — they are HOT!!
https://www.norco.com/bikes/e-mountain/e-trail/fluid-vlt-carbon/2024-fl…
Bosch SX motor and GX Transmission on the C2. That color! Damn!
I wonder when they'll put the new 2024 Norco Range VLTs on their website...
Gotta assume it won’t be too long from now — it’s gonna be so sick! Looks bad to the bone!
Rumor has it the new full power VLT Norcos will be released next week. Possibly Tuesday.
Pretty sure my LBS already has them tucked away for release day.
Any info on them ? Are they going Bosch cx ?
Bosch CX. 750 watt hour battery with the ability to plug a 250 extender. They are super rad.
Yes. Bosch motors, 750 sized batteries and mullet specific.
How heavy do we reckon they'll be? Also are Norco still sticking to their massive wheelbase on their ebikes?
I rode an older model sight VLT and man that thing was a boat. Fun to ride, but a very different experience
I don’t think they’re going to be any lighter than past models.
Sizing has went to S1-5 style. An S5 VLT Range chainstay length is 444mm according to their geo chart. All other models are shorter. Mullet specific probably helps…
EDIT; don’t forget these are high pivot. Probably a bit of chainstay growth under sag.
Shorter chainstays, but the bikes feel fairly long, from what I’ve heard. But also, the new high pivot makes it feel even more planted and like a dh bike, yet somehow more playful than the previous version Range, from what people have said.
The reach numbers definitely seem to have grown. Hopefully gonna throw a leg over one today to see if it’s extreme. I have an XL analog Range at the moment…
I have the current Range VLT A1, it's 30kg (66lb) with DD tyres and Cushcore up back, they HAVE to make it lighter lol.
Also, the 462mm chainstays are sick on that bike, but I'm on an XL... it's ludicrous the same CS is on a medium and small bike.
What size battery do you have?
I got to ride a S5 carbon (C1) Range in the parking lot today. It’s a big bike! 58lbs stock. Really nice build.
I basically put one on order, but it’s looking like pre-orders were strong and they might be sold out already. :facepalm
Just the 720, buddy of mine has the C1 and it's a lot lighter, but still 26+kg
Gotcha. They haven’t built up the aluminum one they have, but I bet it’s 28 kg at least. For what it’s worth, I don’t think Norco is really concerned about making lightweight bikes these days.
Heard a rumor over the weekend that Shimano will be upping their EP801 motor via a firmware update in the near future to help compete with Brose (680wh) and the Dyname (700wh) motors. This power game is gonna get interesting fast.
