Thought this was pretty impressive and worth posting about, Tyler waite who will be first year juinor this year racing for yeti development team got the fastest overall time of the day at nz national champs with a pretty stacked field. Gonna be one to watch out for this year
Also Tuhoto Ariki Pene is listed as Rotorua Mountain Bike Club, not an industry team.

Looks like Lachlan and Tyler (who both belong to big teams) are also listed under their local cycling club. Dunno what this means for Tuhoto’s case, or what it means at all, actually. Any 🥝’s wanna chime in and tell us how race registration works down there?
Greg Callahgan riding an ibis with Sram/rockshox and hayes brakes. Also still in his Red Bull helmet. I imagine Ronan will have one waiting for him when he gets home from Tasmania.

He certainly gave them a nice plug in the interview after his race run.

*edit: Come to think of it, with the times these two have been posting in the last year, we could very well see a repeat of what Goldstone and Williams were doing in ‘22, when they often posted the fastest time of the whole weekend. SO STOKED. #dhrulez
Wait, are you saying that Asa and Tyler in their first year Junior are going to set better times than Goldstone and Williams in Elite? I think it is a very daring and optimistic comment..

I don't think that is what he meant. More so, the battle they had as Juniors and were frequently having the fastest time of the day, over the Elites, as Juniours

Yes, I definitely think that it might happen, considering it’s been done before, by Goldstone, Williams, Hill, Voullioz, and possibly others as well. Look at what Asa did at the US Open last year. Look at what Tyler did at NZ champs last weekend. It is not outside the realm of possibility for either of them to embarrass some big names next year. That’s what’s got me fired up!
Williams and Goldstone did it in their second year as Juniors, setting best times in only a few races. WC is not a US Open, nor a New Zealand Championship, in WC the big Dogs bite, and the first year for a Junior in WC is a time of transition and learning.
The time when Nico was a junior is nothing like what it is today.
I don't share your opinion, but I will respect it.

Have to be part of a local MTB “Club” in order to register to race at nationals is all. Doesn’t mean much at all

You will find that most UCI inscribed races that download inscription data from the UCI database list a rider’s club or “local association” instead of the sponsor the riders filled in. The NZ cycling database also likely attributes riders to clubs based on where they list their home adress. In the US, depending on how annoying the UCI commisare is on site and how adamant the timers and race directors are, we have seen UCI ref’s list what historical road racing district a rider is from in the sponsor field- i’m sure you can find plenty of historical domestic UCI results where a Shaw Bro or Chris Grice are listed as racing for Carolina’s Cycling Association, or a Mullaly racing for Pennsylvania Cycling Association, for example. Pretty annoying for the athletes, and at least in America it’s a useless gesture.
Cycling isn’t supposed to function without clubs and local associations, yet we stumble on. In some countries(including America before 2003)you can’t register a “team” unless it attached to a “club”, and your team also must promote at least one race for your club…
That’s how cycling historically has always survived, mutual support organizations that pool resources across a community to create opportunities for national and international level competition.

In fairness to Asa, I've seen the kid up close and personal. Something very unique about him. And I've been lucky to see most every World Cup winner up close.
He's not just "youth fast". He is very much under control at a pace few kids have.
I'll say that much.
But with all youth, it's all about injuries and the lack thereof. Lets just enjoy 2024. There are about to be new, freakish kids from all over the world in the gate set to surprise us. Can't wait.
Nigel Page getting a different sponsor? That's major though if you ask me, Rocky, Ibis and Pivot are the Shimano/Fox brands, hardly any Sram components in their production bikes, let alone race teams.
Nigel Page just put a goodbye and thanks post on Instagram. I find this super sad, as he is one class act as a human being...
Nigel Page just put a goodbye and thanks post on Instagram. I find this super sad, as he is one class act as a human being. I read this as in ”hopes were still on until the last moment”. I can't wish him and the team anything else but the best.
I want to add one more thing here: I met Pagey 22 years ago at the Worlds. He was injured and watched the races from the side and somehow I ended up talking to him. Being the kid in love with racing that I was and still am, I asked for his team jersey before we left. He said he didn't have one with him, but asked for my address. 3 months later, in the middle of winter, when I totally forgot and wasn't expecting anything a package appeared with a brand new jersey inside, with his name and the team sponsors on it. I was nobody, just a kid at the races. Needless to say, this made my day and it's something I will never ever forget. The jersey is framed and exhibited since 10+ years in our local bike shop. It's obviously not about the jersey, but about the person who would care enough to do something like that. Pagey is someone to look up to, no doubt.

Wow, amazing story. Thanks for sharing! Gutted for Pagey and everyone involved with Nukeproof.

Pretty awesome that he paid Brent Foes a visit while on his family vacation & took the fam along.
Race Face is owned by Fox, the suspension company. And Race Face makes cockpit and drivetrain components. Both companies are in direct competition with Sram.

Race Face makes cranks and chainrings, but no shifters, cassettes, chains or derailleurs. It's possible that the team could be running SRAM drivetrain [except the cranks], suspension and droppers, while keeping grip/bar/stem/crank/wheel as RF. We'll find out shortly...
What is up with the Transition Factory Race team? I see they lost their elite men's rider, and now I heard a rumor they are about to lose their youngest and fastest rider Aletha as well... Can anyone confirm this, or know what's going on?

The bigger issue is they are straight up owned by fox. And all of the brands are tied together. So if your sponsored by RF your also on Fox stuff as well.

I think the team in continuing with the juniors(?) AIetha posted not too long about the team for 2024.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if they slashed budgets... Transition is likely short on cashflow (like many brands). Note how they're fire-sale'ing their bikes to generate cashflow. Next thing to do is cut race team to pay employees/creditors. Might not be that bad for them yet though.
That's rad! I thought the Yeti Devo Team was all enduro, good to see the DH bike will get some more use. Full Yeti DH team in 2025.
Asa will be Elite in 2026, would be cool to see a Colorado kid on a Colorado brand. Bring Yeti back to the DH glory days.

it's normal in Aus/NZ cycling to just include your feeder/development club rather than sponsors. Just a federation thing.

Rocky Race Face team off Shimano and onto SRAM. Wonder if it's no longer Race Face?
Rocky SRAM Enduro Team?

nukeproof out of racing, big bummer. Glad to hear they have a different frame sponsor lined up though.
It's not Goodbye to the Team at least.
Sucks seeing riders lose sponsors but she puts this into perspective that a lot of people are losing jobs too.
